As a passionate fan, I can’t forget the excitement that swelled within me nearly a year prior to the release of The Last of Us Part 2, when Naughty Dog shared the news about the multiplayer mode they had planned for the game. This mode was so expansive it eventually evolved into a standalone project, later known as The Last of Us Online. For approximately four years, the development team tirelessly worked on this live-service game. However, towards the end of 2023, we were left disheartened when Naughty Dog made the difficult decision to abandon The Last of Us Online. The primary reason for this decision was that maintaining a live-service title would have consumed an overwhelming amount of their resources and personnel, effectively preventing them from creating single-player games.
As a devoted fan, I must confess that the cancellation of “The Last of Us Online” was quite a letdown after years of anticipation for more information about this highly anticipated game. Regrettably, Naughty Dog never officially unveiled “The Last of Us Online,” leaving its mechanics and overall vision shrouded in mystery. However, recent episodes of the Sacred Symbols+ podcast have shed some light on this enigma courtesy of former PlayStation Indies boss Shuhei Yoshida. Intriguingly, Yoshida shared that he had the privilege of playing “The Last of Us Online,” and declared it to be “great.” While this statement doesn’t provide a wealth of details, it doesn’t exactly come as a shock either given Naughty Dog’s reputation for producing top-notch games.
Naughty Dog Was Very Passionate About The Last of Us Online
He went into more detail about the creation process for “The Last of Us Online,” explaining that Naughty Dog came up with the concept and were eager to bring it to life. However, a review of PlayStation’s live-service games by Bungie in mid-2023 made Naughty Dog realize that continued support for “The Last of Us Online” could interfere with the development of another game called “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet,” which Yoshida referred to as a moment of poor judgment. The executive also clarified that Sony doesn’t mandate its in-house studios to create live-service games, addressing some misconceptions about PlayStation’s approach to these types of projects.
Yoshida pointed out that some studios might adjust their project proposals to match major corporate strategies, boosting their odds of endorsement. However, given the high status and creative freedom Naughty Dog enjoys within PlayStation’s premier group of developers, it seems uncommon for them to follow such a path. With The Last of Us Online being no longer an option and PlayStation’s live-service strategy shrinking, it appears that Naughty Dog is committed to focusing on single-player games in the future.
