- Psychopomp’s Rolling Storm perk makes it an excellent add-clearing weapon, offering game-changing buffs for Arc builds and various scenarios.
With the arrival of Episode Heresy, there have been numerous modifications to the gameplay environment in Destiny 2, particularly affecting the weapons and actions used within it. As a looter-shooter and live-service game, each major update introduces an abundance of fresh weapons and other types of loot into Destiny 2. Seasonal and Episodic guns serve as prime examples, demonstrating this pattern. The weapons in Episode Heresy for Destiny 2 are among the finest compared to previous Episodes, and they work exceptionally well with Arc enhancements. Among these firearms, one stands out distinctly within its subcategory.
More recently, Bungie has been focusing heavily on build customization in Destiny 2, a feature that encourages players to mix and match various game aspects for unique and potent results. However, this experimentation may be challenging due to certain weapons or Exotics being crucial for specific builds to function effectively, making it frustrating if you don’t have them at your disposal. Heresy introduced a third Area-Denial grenade launcher in the game, although some might argue that Witherhoard could also qualify. This unique gun, named Psychopomp, stands out among other Area-Denial GLs as it can hold multiple shots in its magazine.
How Destiny 2’s Psychopomp Breaks a Grenade Launcher Tradition
Typically, legendary non-heavy grenade launchers can hold a single round in their magazine, whether they’re Wave Frames, Breech GLs, or Area-Denial guns in Destiny 2. However, the Psychopomp weapon goes against this norm not just once but twice. This is due to it being able to have Ambitious Assassin as a mod, and its special version featuring two Origin Traits instead of one, including Runneth Over. The Ambitious Assassin trait causes the gun to exceed its magazine capacity after reloading following multiple kills, while Runneth Over makes the gun overflow when reloaded close to allies.
In essence, when equipped with dual perks and Ambitious Assassin, a Psychopomp’s magazine capacity increases from two to three rounds, transforming it into a distinctive Area-Denial weapon and even an unusual alternative to heavy grenade launchers. Interestingly, certain Destiny 2 grenade launchers may have Ambitious Assassin or similar perks, allowing them to carry two shots. Yet, there is no known grenade launcher with an Origin Trait such as Runneth Over, which would further expand the magazine capacity beyond the standard two shots.
Why Destiny 2 Players Shouldn’t Sleep on Psychopomp

In other words, a Psychopomp grenade launcher isn’t always superior to other grenade launchers or even Area-Denial GLs specifically. For instance, the VS Velocity Baton from Destiny 2’s Vesper’s Host Dungeon can be more potent in certain situations, particularly when Arc synergy is weak. This weapon works well with Attrition Orbs and Demolitionist for overall gameplay or Void builds, making it capable of outperforming Psychopomp even without the ability to carry multiple shots in its magazine. However, Psychopomp does have impressive perks, and when combined with the potential for three shots in its magazine, it can significantly alter the game.
Among the outstanding advantages of using Psychopomp in Destiny 2 is the ability to activate Rolling Storm, a feature that bestows one stack of Bolt Charge upon defeating an enemy, and two stacks when Amplified. This trait is particularly beneficial for enhanced Arc builds, making Psychopomp an exceptional weapon for swiftly eliminating groups of enemies. Furthermore, it boosts the single-target damage in certain situations indirectly. Additionally, this weapon boasts other effective damage-enhancing perks, such as Full Court and Frenzy, which can be combined with Ambitious Assassin for solo Dungeon scenarios or Envious Arsenal for complete damage rotations.
An alternative might be discussing the impressive impact of Destiny 2’s latest Elemental Sharpening damage enhancement on Prismatic builds. That said, it’s undeniable that the Psychopomp grenade launcher is exceptional due to its ability to discharge three shots without reloading, a feature that could significantly enhance gameplay experience or even shape a character’s build. Bungie has certainly distinguished this weapon from other Area-Denial GLs with its outstanding design, although obtaining an optimal roll might require some crafting effort.
