On the night of February 7th, it was observed that the PlayStation Network (PSN) was not functioning. The verified Ask PlayStation Twitter account later confirmed that the network resumed operation around 7 PM EST on the following day, which, while shorter than some previous outages, still generated a significant amount of buzz among PlayStation users due to its duration.
Following the announcement that PSN was back online, the AskPlayStation Twitter account offered an apology and a five-day extension for all PS Plus subscriptions as compensation. This gesture follows numerous complaints from users who felt Sony didn’t provide enough information during the service outage. The developers of Marvel Rivals were among the first to discuss the PSN disruption, with PlayStation offering limited details about the situation until then. Frustrated fans requested refunds due to a lack of details, and it appears that Sony has responded by considering reimbursement.
PS Plus Users Get an Automatic 5-Day Extension After the PSN Outage
During the one-day downtime of PlayStation Network (PSN), Sony is providing additional five days of free service to their PS Plus members as a form of apology. Interestingly, Krispy Kreme preceded Sony in offering compensation by giving away free donuts for two hours following the announcement of the outage. It’s important to mention that Sony hasn’t announced any form of compensation for non-subscribers, though they may have been impacted too due to the disruption in streaming services and some single-player games requiring a PSN sign-in but not a PS Plus account. However, those without a subscription didn’t lose any money because of this outage, which might be why Sony is prioritizing PS Plus subscribers in their compensation plan.
Sony hasn’t disclosed the reason behind the recent downtime beyond referring to it as an “operational matter.” Some users have drawn parallels with the 2011 Sony hack that kept PlayStation Network offline for weeks. Although Sony has faced hackers as recently as 2023, this outage might simply be a routine technical glitch. The company may provide more details later, but in the meantime, players can take advantage of their extended free PS Plus membership to compensate for the lost gameplay time.
