2000 saw the launch of Ang Lee’s martial arts epic, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” which garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success on a global scale. After 25 years, this action-packed fantasy is being transformed into a television series for Amazon Prime Video. Based on the 1941 novel by Wang Dulu, the film primarily explored the first installment of the saga titled “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” The cast features Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, and Chang Chen. The story unfolds in 19th-century Imperial China, revolving around two master warriors, Li Mu Bai and Yu Shu Lien, who encounter their toughest test when the enigmatic thief Jen Yu (Zhang) steals the prized Green Destiny sword.
During that period, Ang Lee, renowned for movies such as “The Ice Storm” (1997), featuring Christina Ricci and Sigourney Weaver, earned an impressive ten Academy Award nominations for the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” This was a record-breaking number for a non-English language movie. The film eventually won four awards: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. The movie’s triumph significantly expanded the popularity of the wuxia genre, particularly in Western regions. However, it did encounter some divided opinions in Asia, with some viewers believing that the film had been overly simplified to cater to its Western audience.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Series Greenlit for Amazon’s Prime Video

As reported by Deadline, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” inspired by the Crane-Iron Pentalogy book series by Wang Dulu, is currently being developed for streaming on Prime Video. Jason Ning, known for his work on the TV show “Lucifer,” will be in charge of writing and executive producing the TV adaptation. Alongside him, Ron D. Moore (of “Outlander” and “For All Mankind”) and Maril Davis from Tall Ship Productions will also serve as executive producers. Ying Lou is set to co-executive produce, while Sony Pictures Television handles the production of the adaptation.
The novel that inspired the famous movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” was penned between 1941 and 1942, with subsequent novels in the series being “Crane Startles Kunlun”, “Precious Sword, Golden Hairpin”, “Sword Force”, “Pearl Shine”, and “Iron Knight, Silver Vase”. This adaptation thus has ample opportunity to delve deeper into its source material. Released in 16 U.S. cinemas on 8 December 2000 before a wider release in January 2001, Ang Lee’s movie earned $8,647,295 at the box office. The film eventually grossed $128 million within the U.S., making it the highest-grossing foreign Mandarin-language production ever in America and the first non-English language film to surpass the $100 million mark in the U.S.
The “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” television series is still being worked on, so it’s unlikely that we’ll get a release date or production update anytime soon. But fear not! If you haven’t seen the movie yet or would like to revisit it before the TV show comes out, you can watch the film version right now on Max and HBO.
