Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Summary

  • Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is aimed at a broader audience than kids’ cartoons, with nods to the MCU.
  • Disney has confirmed at least 3 seasons of the show, raising questions surrounding Peter’s father, W.E.B., and more.
  • Season one hints at potential plotlines involving Daredevil, symbiotes, Norman Osborn, and character losses in season two.

The fresh animated series titled “Spider-Man: Neighborhood Hero” deviates from previous kid-focused Spider-Man shows, although it doesn’t align strictly with the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, it does maintain connections by featuring familiar voices, such as Charlie Cox portraying Daredevil. This series takes place in an alternate reality that might connect to the main storyline eventually, given its numerous unresolved plot points at the end of season one.

It’s great news for fans of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” that Disney has guaranteed a minimum of three seasons. Before season two arrives, let’s discuss the unanswered questions from the ending of season one.

Spoilers Ahead for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

7. What Did Richard Parker Do?

Does Peter Know He Is Alive

In the finale of season one, there’s an unexpected twist for a Marvel series as Aunt May makes a trip to a penitentiary, hinting at someone she holds dear within its walls. However, it turns out to be a shocking revelation – it’s Peter’s father, Richard! Yet, it remains unclear if Peter is aware of his father’s survival. The mystery deepens as we question what led to Richard’s incarceration.

In cartoons, this topic seldom gets explored, but it could potentially reverse a significant pattern. It’s possible that Richard might be a recurring criminal character similar to Kingpin in the comics, although it appears rather improbable. The most recent media to offer an intriguing twist on the Parkers was in the The Amazing Spider-Man films, where they were portrayed as spies in hiding.

6. What’s To Come From W.E.B.?

Will Asha Be More Than A Scientist?

Peter advises Harry to allocate some funds to establish a fresh scientific foundation, which aims to nurture promising scientists outside of Oscorp and beyond his father’s scrutiny. The first season concludes as Harry initiates the W.E.B., also known as the Worldwide Engineering Bureau.

He extends invitations to several former coworkers, among them Asha, who appears quite excited about the proposal. One aspect left unclear in the first season is how the world perceives Wakanda. Is Wakanda a dominant force? Is Black Panther recognized globally? Certainly, there’s much ground for Asha and Harry to cover in the upcoming season.

5. How Much Will Daredevil And Finesse Tie Into Season 2?

Richard Parker Could Use A Lawyer

In the first season, Daredevil is portrayed as a superhero but not as a super-lawyer like Matt Murdock. There’s a possibility that Murdock could become involved in Peter’s life, potentially helping him find a way to free Richard. This would allow for more emphasis on the human aspects of the characters rather than their supernatural sides.

Additionally, there’s Jeanne Foucault, known as Finesse, who had penetrated Oscorp. She decides to team up with W.E.B., working for Daredevil to maintain her espionage activities. Perhaps in the second season, their combined efforts will result in more screen time for both characters.

4. Was That A Symbiote?

And How Will Norman Repurpose That Ooze?

When can we expect the appearance of Venom? This question often arises when a fresh Spider-Man project is announced. Fans are particularly fond of Venom, and it’s intriguing that in the latest Spider-Man installment, Venom seems to be engaging in combat with Doctor Strange. Or at least, there appears to be a symbiote battling Doctor Strange when Peter Parker arrives at his new school. It definitely looks like Venom, but he seems to have a more insectoid form this time around.

In my humble opinion as a film critic, this mysterious substance left over from the climactic battle in episode ten could either be a symbiote character straight out of the comics or an entirely new creation. Regardless, it seems our antagonist Norman might have collected it for further examination and experimentation down the line.

3. How Will Norman Use Doc Ock’s Research?

Could He Become Doctor Octopus?

In the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, there was a clever plot device where characters appeared ordinary but were actually hiding something sinister. For instance, Norman Osborn initially seemed like a positive influence for Peter, but just like other incarnations of this character, he ended up being less than admirable. The comics, as well as the cartoon itself, hinted at his transformation into the Green Goblin, a role he has traditionally played. Additionally, the glider was also present in this animation.

Nevertheless, with the tech from Doc Ock that he pilfers, there’s a chance Norman could end up as Doc Ock himself. It’s certainly strange, yet somehow fitting with the unpredictable nature of things. Perhaps he could blend the characters and emerge as the Green Octopus instead?

2. Will Peter Lose Someone In Season 2?

From Nico To Pearl, The Odds Are Stacked Against Peter

In the comics, MJ remains Peter’s eternal love despite their repeated separations. He also experiences losing other women, such as Gwen Stacey. However, both MJ and Gwen are missing in the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Instead, Nico Minoru and Pearl take their roles.

Peter has feelings for Pearl, but his closest friend is Nico, who might harbor feelings for him too. It’s inevitable that Peter will lose someone in his life (it’s just how things are for Peter Parker). Between the two characters we’ve met so far, it’s possible that either Nico or Pearl could be the one to leave him. Nico has magical abilities, allowing her to communicate with the deceased, but that opens up a different set of questions altogether.

1. Is Lonnie The 110th Street Gang’s New Leader?

The Rise Of Tombstone

Lonnie Lincoln bears a resemblance to a typical jock, much like Flash Thompson, who is often Peter’s sports-related adversary. However, Lonnie stands out as being more laid-back and family-oriented than the average jock, boasting both football skills and intellectual prowess. Peter and Lonnie share a strong friendship, but this bond is tested when Lonnie joins the 110th Street Gang in an attempt to rescue his brother.

In the thrilling final battle of episode nine, Lonnie finds himself coated in chemicals causing his body to stiffen. This is reminiscent of Alonzo Lincoln, aka Tombstone, from the comics. Although the backstory varies, Lonnie has undeniably earned the moniker “Tombstone.” So, what’s next for him? Will Lonnie transform into a single piece of gray matter as depicted in the comics? And will he take over the gang now that he possesses this power?
