You’re Hating on Vanillite This Weekend

Summary

  • Pokemon GO’s April 2025 Community Day stars Vanillite
  • Vanillite is generally one of the most disliked Pokemon in the fandom, largely because many perceive its design to be uninspired.
  • The upcoming Community Day will take place on April 27.

The April 2025 Community Day for Pokemon GO will feature Vanillite, a pocket monster that is widely disliked not only among the Pokemon GO community but also beyond it, as announced by Niantic.

Initially introduced in Niantic’s popular mobile game “Pokemon GO” on December 22, 2020, during the Team Rocket grunt invasion, was Vanilite. Three years after that, its shiny version, the ice cream Pokemon, made its debut on Christmas of 2023.

For the first time ever, Vanilite is set to host a Community Day event for Pokemon GO, as announced by Niantic. This special occasion will occur on April 27th, from 2pm to 5pm in local time. As with previous Community Days, this event provides players an opportunity to gather more of the highlighted Pokemon, as Vanillite will be appearing much more frequently in the wild during these hours. Additionally, the likelihood of encountering a rare, shiny version of the pocket monster will be significantly higher, with approximately 1 out of every 20 Vanillites that appear during the three-hour window being a shiny variant, based on Niantic’s past trends.

Why Do So Many Pokemon Fans Dislike Vanillite?

The responses on social media about the latest Community Day announcement have been varied, primarily due to the fact that many fans dislike Vanillite. There are several reasons behind its poor standing among the fanbase, but the primary factor is often the design itself, which is generally considered one of the worst in Pokemon history. Thematically food-based creatures aren’t typically well-received, and Vanillite serves as a frequent example of an unimaginative design, being depicted as a flying ice cream cone.

The criticism leveled at Vanillish and its evolutions, Vanilluxe, also holds true for their evolutionary stages. Additionally, many trainers perceive Vanillite’s final form as tactically restrictive because of its relatively modest move set, and it faces certain challenges in battle. On the offensive side, Ice-type Pokemon are strong against four types: Grass, Ground, Flying, and Dragon. However, this advantage is offset by the fact that Ice Pokemon have four weaknesses – Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel – while only resisting one type, itself. This makes Ice one of the most defensively weak types in the entire series, tied with Normal.

In the case of Pokemon GO, these compatibility problems extend to it as well, meaning that the forthcoming Community Day may not assist players in creating a more competitive team for the GO Battle League. During the April 2025 Community Day, any Vanillite caught will receive an event-exclusive move called Avalanche.
