As a long-time Yu-Gi-Oh fan since the days of the original anime and its early handheld games, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming “Yu-Gi-Oh: Early Days Collection.” Growing up, I had the privilege (or was it a curse?) of owning a Game Boy and later a Game Boy Advance, which allowed me to immerse myself in the world of Duel Monsters whenever I wanted.

As a die-hard Yu-Gi-Oh! fan here, I’m thrilled to share that Konami has announced some fantastic news for us! The legendary series titles, Yu-Gi-Oh: The Eternal Duelist Soul, The Sacred Cards, and Reshef of Destruction, are all set to be included in the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection. This collection is a rejuvenated compilation of classic Yu-Gi-Oh! games, which was first announced in February as part of the franchise’s 25th anniversary celebration. The announcement also brought exciting reveals like a new anime series based on the card game’s lore and updates to ongoing games such as Master Duel. This is truly an exciting time for Yu-Gi-Oh! fans like me!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Reminiscence of the Early Days Collection

On the official Twitter account dedicated to retro Yu-Gi-Oh merchandise, they recently announced some new additions. Back in October, it was revealed that the initial three Game Boy and Game Boy Color Yu-Gi-Oh games would be included. More recently, they’ve confirmed that Yu-Gi-Oh: The Eternal Duelist Soul, The Sacred Cards, and Reshef of Destruction will also be part of the collection. Notably, The Sacred Cards is often remembered as a nostalgic classic, while many fans consider Yu-Gi-Oh: The Eternal Duelist Soul to be one of the best Yu-Gi-Oh games ever produced.

What Games are in Yu-Gi-Oh: Early Days Collection?

  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (Game Boy) [Japan only]
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 2 : Dark Duel Stories (Game Boy, Game Boy Color) [Japan only]
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories (Game Boy Color) [Originally released in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 3: Tri-Holy God Advent]
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 4: Battle of the Great Duelist (Game Boy Color) [Japan only]
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 6: Expert 2 (Game Boy Advance) [Japan only]
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! The Eternal Duelist Soul (Game Boy Advance) [Remake of the Japan only Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 5: Expert 1]
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards (Game Boy Advance) [Originally released in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 7: The Duelcity Legend]
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction (Game Boy Advance) [Originally released in Japan as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 8: Reshef of Destruction]

The title “Reshef of Destruction” isn’t generally well-received, as it sparks strong disagreement among enthusiasts. Some appreciate the challenge it offers compared to “The Sacred Cards“, while others argue that its steep learning curve and numerous mechanics that extend gameplay duration are frustrating for players. Both games share an early iteration of the mechanics and elemental weakness system from “Yu-Gi-Oh“, which remains a contentious issue among fans who value nostalgia versus those who are more recent to the series.

Many Yu-Gi-Oh enthusiasts remain thrilled as these classic Yu-Gi-Oh games, such as Duel Monsters, Duel Monsters 2, Duel Monsters 4, and Duel Monsters 6, are being updated and ported to modern platforms. Notably, some of these older games were exclusive to Japan, so this remastering will offer the first chance for fans to play them. As more titles are expected to be announced, fans eagerly anticipate the potential return of games like Forbidden Memories and Dungeon Dice Monsters in this collection.
