As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comic book and superhero movie fandom under my belt, I must admit that I am absolutely thrilled about the return of the Russo Brothers to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars! Their previous work on Infinity War, Endgame, Winter Soldier, and Civil War has left an indelible mark on the MCU’s history, and their presence will undoubtedly bring a sense of familiarity that I welcome with open arms.

Marvel Studios made headlines by confirming that the Russo Brothers will once more join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to direct two forthcoming Avengers movies titled Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: War of Secrets. Since this news, Zack Snyder, a director renowned for his work within the superhero genre, has expressed his opinion on the Russos helming these upcoming Avengers productions.

As a dedicated Marvel fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement when I heard the news that Robert Downey Jr., the man who brought Iron Man to life, will be taking on the role of Doctor Doom in the upcoming films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. This is a dream come true for me, as these are two of the most iconic storylines from the Marvel Comics universe.

In an interview on ReelBlend Podcast, Zack Snyder expressed his thoughts about the director’s cuts of his “Rebel Moon” films coming to Netflix on August 2nd. When asked about the possibility of the Russo brothers returning to helm “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”, Snyder showed his appreciation for the Russo brothers’ skills as filmmakers in the superhero genre, hinting at his excitement to see their future projects that will no doubt be impressive and shake things up a bit.

Reframing the situation: The Russo Brothers’ return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), following their acclaimed works like Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War, stirs anticipation. Their presence could provide a comforting sense of continuity, rather than disruption, given their proven success. Since directing films such as The Gray Man, Cherry, and The Electric State after Endgame, it seems the Russo Brothers are brimming with fresh ideas and eager to steer the MCU through another significant evolution. Zack Snyder acknowledges their contributions and appears genuinely excited about the innovative directions these upcoming Avengers films might take in shaping the larger narrative.

Before San Diego Comic-Con, it was rumored that Destin Daniel Cretton, who had a strong understanding of the Kang storyline, was set to direct the fifth Avengers film, then known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, in November 2023, Cretton left the project. As a result, Marvel Studios and actor Jonathan Majors, who played Kang the Conqueror, parted ways after Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment charges. Now, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom replacing Kang as the main antagonist, the upcoming films such as Doomsday and Secret Wars, will feature a new lineup of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including The Fantastic Four. They are expected to debut following their MCU introduction in the re-titled film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

As an eager admirer, I can’t wait to see how the Russo brothers pull off “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” scheduled for release on May 7, 2027. These movies promise an unforgettable cinematic journey!
