In the Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake, you’ll encounter a musician named Zalen throughout your journey. Finding him in different places will eventually reward you with Erdrick’s Helm and unlock the ‘A New Song of Erdrick‘ achievement.

Completing this questline will also reward you with one of the 40 Mini Medals. You’ll specifically need to travel to a place called Western Isle to finish it.
Zalen Questline Guide for Dragon Quest 1 H-2D Remake (A New Song of Erdrick)
Forgotten Ruins
You’ll first encounter Zalen in the Forgotten Ruins, located south of the Shrine of Rain and east of Wayfarer’s Chapel (across the water). It’s in the northern-central part of the map, making it accessible fairly early in the game. When you reach him, look for an exclamation mark above his head – that means he’s ready to talk!
Nameless Ruins
You can find Zalen at the Nameless Ruins. They’re located on the west side of the map, a bit southwest of Craggy Cave and south of the Roadside Inn.
Damdara
Okay, so next up, you absolutely have to go to Damdara! It’s a little tricky to get to – you’ll need to head over the mountains and it’s southwest of Faerie Village. Just remember it’s north of the Citadel of the Monarch of Medals, and you’ll be good to go!
Cantlin
Okay, so I need to head to Cantlin next to find Zalen. It’s southeast on the map – basically east of Wayfarer’s Inn and northwest of the Shrine of the Spirit. When I get there, I should look for him standing on a bridge right near the ponds in the middle of town. Got it!
Galenholm
Your next stop in the Zalen quest is Galenholm, located in the far northwest of the map. Once you arrive, you’ll find Zalen waiting on the beach. After talking to him, he’ll tell you where to go next…
Field of Flowers
You can find The Field of Flowers in the southwest part of the map, close to the Mini Medal Monarch. When you arrive, you’ll need to talk to the Over-Seer.
Shrine of Rain
Okay, so from the Field of Flowers, I used Zoom to quickly travel up north to the Shrine of Rain and talked to Dream-Whisperer. She then transported me to this totally new place called the Western Isle. It’s an island just west of Tantegel – apparently, it’s where Edrick first arrived in Alefgard! Pretty cool.
Western Isle
Head to the left side of the area and check the grave – you’ll find Erdrick’s Helm there. Once you have it, talk to the Dream Whisperer to continue.
Rimuldar
To complete Zalen’s quest and earn the ‘A New Song of Erdrick’ trophy, you’ll need to go to Rimuldar. It’s located on the eastern side of the map, just north of the Cave of the Dwarves.
Talking to Zalen – you can find him by the benches near the water – will finish his questline and show you the final cutscene for his story.
