A new update has unexpectedly arrived for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on both the Nintendo Switch and the newer Nintendo Switch 2. Originally revealed in 2013, the game took several years to develop and wasn’t released until 2017. Though first planned for the Wii U, the lengthy development process meant it ultimately launched alongside the brand-new Nintendo Switch.
Since it came out, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been a standout game, not just for the Zelda series, but for all video games. It completely changed the formula for the series, breaking from tradition and inspiring many other open-world games with its amazing and innovative design, giving players incredible freedom. A sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, was released in 2023, and both games were recently updated for the new Nintendo Switch 2 when it launched last June.
Zelda Breath of the Wild Update Offers New Language, Gameplay Improvements

As a huge Zelda fan, I was so excited to see the patch notes for Breath of the Wild’s Version 1.9.0 update! The biggest news for me is that the game now supports Thai language on the Switch 2! If you change your system settings to “Thai/English”, the text will appear in Thai. Just a heads-up though – the voice acting isn’t in Thai yet. If you want to keep the English voices, just set the in-game language to “Match System Settings” and it’ll automatically switch back to English.

A recent update has been released for both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo hasn’t detailed exactly what’s changed in Breath of the Wild, but the update for Tears of the Kingdom (Version 1.4.3) includes general gameplay improvements and fixes a bug where the Black Hinox enemy at Hyrule Castle wouldn’t register as defeated, preventing players from getting a specific monster medal.
Even though The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out nearly ten years ago, Nintendo is still updating both that game and its sequel to improve the experience for players on Nintendo Switch. However, the patch notes are pretty general, leaving players wondering exactly what’s been fixed. We’ll probably find out over the next few days as players test the updates and share whether they improve the game’s stability or remove any glitches.
This recent update might just be a temporary fix while Nintendo gets ready to release more Zelda content later this year. While 2026 is the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, Nintendo hasn’t said if they’ll celebrate it as extensively as they’re celebrating Super Mario’s 40th anniversary. It’s possible this update is a small release to keep fans occupied until a bigger celebration is revealed at the next Nintendo Direct presentation this summer.
