As a dedicated Zelda fan with a lifetime of Hyrule adventures under my belt, it’s always intriguing to see how the series evolves. The latest installment, Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, has certainly shaken things up! For once, we find ourselves controlling Princess Zelda, and that alone is a breath of fresh air in the world of Link and Ganondorf.
From the inception of the initial “Legend of Zelda” game, key elements have been consistently present in almost every subsequent installment. Typically, Link is tasked with rescuing Princess Zelda from Ganondorf using any methods available. Although additional adversaries or characters are frequently introduced, the core conflict often revolves around these three primary figures. However, it appears that “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” could be introducing some changes to this pattern.
It appears that Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is undergoing significant transformations. Besides reinstating the series to its foundational elements, it marks a first as players assume the role of Princess Zelda in the mainline series, providing a distinct gaming experience. However, Nintendo didn’t stop at these overhauls. Alongside these major changes, the game’s narrative has also swapped the malevolent Ganon for an entirely new adversary. Intriguingly, even as the game nears its conclusion, the franchise’s traditional antagonist seems to be missing from the battle.
Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Does Not Seem to Rely on Ganon Anymore
Ganon Has Been the Primary Antagonist for Years
Ganondorf has been a recurring figure in the “Legend of Zelda” series since it began, always appearing in his monstrous form. He first made a significant appearance in “Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” where he adopted one of his most memorable appearances. Throughout multiple games, he has either taken on the role of the main antagonist or pulled strings from behind the scenes. Players have grown accustomed to thwarting his evil schemes, and many have come to appreciate his formidable status as a villain.
Just as Mario has spent countless adventures trying to vanquish Bowser, Link and Ganon have been entwined since their beginnings, with Ganon becoming an iconic antagonist. This villainous figure has even crossed over to games like “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” and spun off into titles like “Hyrule Warriors.” Given this history, it would have seemed fitting for Ganon to appear in “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” especially since the game places players in the role of his main captive. However, it appears that’s not the plan.
Ganon Has Taken a Backseat This Time Around
In the beginning of “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom”, players find themselves controlling Link on his mission to vanquish Ganon yet again and rescue Princess Zelda from the latest scheme concocted by the antagonist. The gameplay initially seems rather routine as players dispatch enemies, but soon events take a dramatic turn. Upon defeating Ganon, Link is pulled into a puzzling vortex, which leaves it to Princess Zelda to safeguard Hyrule from impending doom.
In this story, although characters might expect Ganon to be a central figure, he actually plays a minor role. He reappears later in the game, but mainly as an obstacle. Importantly, this obstacle is not genuine Ganon; instead, it’s a pretender. Once Zelda manages to vanquish the imposter and rescue Link, they focus their efforts on Null and the widening rifts, leaving Ganon feeling like an insignificant detail in the grand scheme of things.
While Ganon remains Zelda and Link’s long-standing adversary, it’s pleasing to witness another villain as the main character in this game. Moreover, having the events unfold without Ganon’s manipulation adds a delightful twist. However, given the series tradition, it’s likely that this villain will reappear or transform into Ganon in some capacity in future installments, possibly regaining his role as the primary antagonist. For now though, players can savor a new kind of Zelda experience.
