Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Is a Sign of Life for One Ailing Series Tradition

Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom Is a Sign of Life for One Ailing Series Tradition

Highlights

  • Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom breaks tradition by making Zelda the main playable character with unique weapons.
  • The game revives the tradition of having a companion character, like previous titles neglected to do.
  • The introduction of Tri in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom hints at a return to the series’ companionship roots.

In a new twist for the beloved “The Legend of Zelda” series, “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” introduces Princess Zelda as the primary playable character. While she has appeared as a playable character in games like “Hyrule Warriors,” this is the first time she takes the lead role in a mainline “Legend of Zelda” title, displacing Link as the main protagonist. In this game, instead of wielding Link’s famous weapons and tools, Zelda is armed with the Tri Rod, which bears some resemblance to the Ultrahand ability from “Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.”

Although The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom introduces new elements to the series, it remains faithful to some long-standing Zelda traditions. One such tradition, which was downplayed in the latest games, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, is now making a comeback in Echoes of Wisdom. By reviving this tradition, Echoes of Wisdom demonstrates that it may not be gone forever, offering fans reassurance that the franchise hasn’t completely severed ties with its past for the sake of modernization.

Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom’s Tri Is a Good Sign for the Series’ Future

The Most Recent Zelda Titles Largely Abandoned the Series’ Iconic Companion Characters

In the course of the “Legend of Zelda” games, Link has been joined on his quests by a diverse array of companions. Many of these beings are diminutive fairies, such as Navi from “Zelda: Ocarina of Time” and Tatl from “Zelda: Majora’s Mask.” Yet, some have assumed more humanoid shapes, like Midna in “Zelda: Twilight Princess” and Fi in “Zelda: Skyward Sword.” In every “Legend of Zelda” installment where Link receives a companion, this character typically functions as a guide for him. They impart knowledge, share backstory, and inform Link about his current environment. Fairies, such as Navi from “Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” even support Link in battle.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve grown accustomed to Link having a trusty companion by his side in every adventure. However, my dear friends, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom took a different approach. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the Sages in Tears of the Kingdom, but they don’t quite measure up to the bond we used to share with Link’s former companions. Instead of being loyal friends ready to lend a helping hand, these new companions are more like tools that grant Link additional abilities. But fear not! The upcoming Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom brings back the heartwarming tradition of meaningful companionship. Tri from this game is already showing great promise in restoring the series to its roots.

Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom’s Tri Shows the Companion System Still Lives

As someone who has been a long-time fan of The Legend of Zelda series, I’m always excited for new installments and the latest revelations about them. Based on what we’ve seen in the announcement trailer for Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Tri seems to be more than just a simple tool for Zelda as she explores Hyrule.

In the game “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” the depth of Zelda and Tri’s relationship is yet to be explored, but their friendship brings a renewed sense of vitality to what was once a faltering series staple. Here’s hoping that moving forward, “The Legend of Zelda” will stay true to form and provide players with engaging companions for upcoming journeys.
