As a long-time gamer and avid fan of The Legend of Zelda series, I’m beyond excited for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Following the incredible journey that was Tears of the Kingdom, it’s refreshing to see Nintendo shake things up with a new protagonist and unique gameplay mechanics.
Approximately a year after the release of the hugely successful game “Tears of the Kingdom” from Zelda, Nintendo is coming out with another major title in this series called “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom“. This game features a different perspective, being presented as a top-down adventure using the adorable art style of the remake of Link’s Awakening. Despite its change in presentation, “Echoes of Wisdom” is expected to make a big impact on both the Zelda franchise and the Nintendo Switch before its lifecycle ends. In this game, Princess Zelda steps into the limelight as the main character, and her journey will differ significantly from Link’s typical quests.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share my experience with Echoes of Wisdom and its unique addition to The Legend of Zelda series. In this game, I get to meet the enchanting fairy Tri and her accompanying Tri Rod. With these tools, Zelda gains the ability to replicate a certain number of items and enemies, providing endless possibilities for problem-solving.
Tears of the Kingdom Is The First And Last Stop For One Incredible Ability
When news reached gamers that top Nintendo developers announced Tears of the Kingdom as the conclusion to the Hyrule established in Breath of the Wild, the response was generally favorable. Although the intention was for the series to continue its open-world take on The Legend of Zelda‘s formula, a shift in setting and gameplay mechanics after several console generations spent with the same foundation felt invigorating. However, the most significant loss from this decision was likely the Ultrahand mechanic in TotK, a new fundamental ability that played a major role in the game and was also reportedly discarded.
Echoes of Wisdom’s Equivalent Ability Could Share That Trait
It is also understandable that Nintendo would want to leave an ability so closely tied to Tears of the Kingdom‘s identity out of future games, but it’s still unfortunate that they would be denied the most expressive tool the franchise has ever had in the process. Echoes of Wisdom‘s Echoes have inspired hope in Nintendo’s ability to create suitably impressive replacements for Ultrahand, as Zelda’s ability shares many parallels with Link’s arm power. However, it feels like their similarities are also going to include their faults, and ultimately their fate as the signature moves of two Nintendo Switch-exclusive Legend of Zelda titles.
TotK and Echoes of Wisdom’s Star Powers Can’t Be Removed From Their Sources
A plausible explanation for why Ultrahand and Echoes may be restricted to their initial games is that they are integral parts of those games’ mechanics and player experiences. Ultrahand, with its Tri Rod system, significantly alters the way players interact with the games, making it challenging to transfer these elements to new projects without disrupting their fundamental designs. Similarly, Echoes’ Zelda is predominantly defined by her ability to jump and lift specific items, which would need to be reconsidered if these mechanics were altered or removed in future installments. The intricacy of both systems necessitates extensive asset transfers and adjustments that could significantly impact any subsequent Zelda game.
This Flaw Doesn’t Make Ultrahand and Echoes Any Less Impactful
It’s regrettable to let go of Ultrahand and Echoes, but it’s essential for new Zelda games to stand out as unique and impactful. The hours spent discovering new mechanics and problem-solving in Tears of the Kingdom and Echoes of Wisdom make repeated plays enjoyable. Ultrahand may not be the only tool Link wields in TotK, and who knows what special items Zelda could replicate in EoW to rival it? In the end, the echoes of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom should inspire future game designs, leaving a lasting impression.
