Zelda Fans Are Still Begging Nintendo to Port 2 Classic Games to the Switch

With the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda approaching, fans are urging Nintendo to release remastered versions of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on the Switch. The Legend of Zelda series, set in the world of Hyrule, remains one of Nintendo’s most popular and enduring franchises. Starting with the original game on the NES, over 20 major Zelda titles have been released, and fans especially cherish a specific period of the series’ history.

The Nintendo GameCube was home to several beloved Zelda games that remain fan favorites. Just over a year after the console launched in 2001, Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, a unique cel-shaded adventure set in a vast ocean. Later, near the end of the GameCube’s lifespan, Twilight Princess arrived with a more mature story and also served as a launch title for the Nintendo Wii. Now, many fans are hoping Nintendo will bring these GameCube Zelda games to the Switch 2.

Zelda Fans Want Switch Remasters for the 40th Anniversary

Fans of the Zelda series are hoping Nintendo will release updated versions of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess for the upcoming Switch 2. These games originally received HD remasters on the Wii U, including new features like Amiibo support. Despite the Wii U not being a commercial success, Nintendo hasn’t made these remastered Zelda games available on any other console. While Twilight Princess had some connection to Breath of the Wild, both games are currently unplayable on the original Switch, with The Wind Waker only accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online service on Switch 2.

For years, Nintendo fans have been asking for updated versions of the Legend of Zelda games to be released on the Switch. Because the Switch uses cartridges and isn’t compatible with older game formats, players haven’t been able to play these classics. Nintendo hasn’t said much about bringing the GameCube-era remasters to the Switch, even though fan demand has been increasing. Many fans are now hopeful that with Zelda‘s 40th anniversary approaching, Nintendo will follow the example set by other popular franchises and release these highly requested remasters.

The Legend of Zelda Could Have Major Anniversary Plans

Fans have pointed to Nintendo’s recent approach with the Mario series when requesting remastered Zelda games. Nintendo celebrated Mario’s 35th and 40th anniversaries with special collections of games. The 35th anniversary brought Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and the 40th included a compilation of older 3D Mario games on the Switch, including new releases of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. With the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda approaching, there are also plans for major celebrations and expansions of the franchise beyond just video games.
