In an unexpected twist for the beloved “The Legend of Zelda” series, the game titled “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” has deviated from its usual path in various ways. While fans anticipated changes with Zelda becoming the playable character, it was the handling of the series’ enduring villain that caught many off guard.
In most instances, Link’s arch-nemesis is typically Ganon, a monstrous embodiment of evil often resurrected as Ganondorf for added terror. However, trailers for the game Echoes of Wisdom showed Link defeating Ganon at the beginning, raising speculation about his return in a more powerful form later on. Unexpectedly, Ganon didn’t reappear to serve as the main antagonist. Instead, a new villain named Null emerged in the Zelda series. Known as the emptiness trapped within Hyrule’s kingdom, Null aims to dissolve the land entirely, which might be an even more devastating fate for the kingdom than Ganon’s rule. This implies that the role of the villain in the Zelda series may not be as fixed as players had assumed.
Ganon Always Returns, but May Need a Break
In simpler terms, Ganon is a character that gamers love to dislike, and his role in the Zelda series is unshakable, ensuring his return to the boss arena isn’t far off. Over 11 different forms of Ganon throughout the series, he remains an intriguing character and a formidable adversary. This rings especially true in his recent portrayal as the antagonist in Tears of the Kingdom, where he was given a more detailed backstory along with two new powerful forms. However, this version of the character is so impressive, it might be tough for him to top it again anytime soon.
It’s hard for many to dispute that Ganondorf is the most impressive villain in the series. However, it’s challenging for creators to consistently surpass past portrayals of him, whether it’s within the game’s storyline or in reality during development. This struggle often results in other antagonists being introduced between Ganondorf’s appearances. These gaps give developers time to ponder what makes this character so captivating and ways to enhance Ganon following Tears of the Kingdom. While his absence may be felt, it generally leads to a more intriguing confrontation in the future.
It’s Time for New Villains to Steal the Spotlight
Although Ganondorf is undeniably villainous, he’s not the sole source of evil that Hyrule must guard against. In fact, some outstanding Zelda games feature antagonists other than Ganon as the main adversary. For instance, Skull Kid from Majora’s Mask made a lasting impression with just one appearance as the primary villain, earning the respect of players. Characters like Vaati have even starred in multiple games where they assume the role of final boss, making each encounter more engaging and challenging. In essence, characters such as Null, Vaati, and Skull Kid enrich the Zelda storyline by opening up new dimensions within the mythos.
Some games that don’t include a boss fight against Ganon are:
- Majora’s Mask
- Link’s Awakening
- Skyward Sword
- Minish Cap
- Oracle of Seasons / Ages
In other words, it’s possible that Ganon could return as a formidable adversary for either Link or Zelda in future games, but at this point, no new Zelda titles have been announced. However, we can expect another adventure in Hyrule soon enough, and the identity of the antagonist is yet to be revealed. Some fans might view Ganon’s brief appearance in “Echoes of Wisdom” as a positive development, as it offers a respite for the character after his impressive performance, preventing the series from growing stale with repetitive storylines and battles.
