Zelda Has One Clear Advantage Over Link in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Highlights

  • Zelda takes the protagonist role in Echoes of Wisdom, a new top-down installation in The Legend of Zelda.
  • Zelda’s gender allows easy access to Gerudo Town, setting her apart from Link.
  • Having Zelda as the protagonist may open up unique avenues to characterize Gerudo society.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of Zelda adventures under my belt, I must say that the shift to Zelda as the protagonist in Echoes of Wisdom is a refreshing change of pace. After years of playing as Link, it’s intriguing to finally don the crown and take on the role of the Princess herself.

After Link has been the primary protagonist in the Legend of Zelda series for close to four decades, it’s quite a change to see Zelda stepping up as the leader in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. For the first time in a main Zelda game, Princess Zelda is taking on Link’s role, determined to save Hyrule when mysterious rifts start consuming it. Although Link isn’t completely absent from the storyline, players will control him at least during certain parts of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Despite this, Zelda seems poised to be the central playable character, a demand that many fans have been expressing for quite some time now.

In the latest trailer for “Echoes of Wisdom,” titled “Journeying Through Hyrule,” we get an extensive look at this version of Hyrule, featuring the vast Gerudo Desert and its resident society, the Gerudos. For those familiar with the franchise, the Gerudo Desert and its main city, Gerudo Town, will seem familiar as the Gerudos are renowned for their fierce protection of their culture and reluctance to let strangers in. However, Zelda being the protagonist in “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” may provide her with an advantage among the Gerudos that Link never had, potentially leading to a distinctive player experience.

Zelda Has a Natural Inroad to Gerudo Society

The Gerudo Are a Matriarchal People With Strict Laws Against Men Entering Their Society

In the captivating world of The Legend of Zelda series, the Gerudo stand out uniquely among Hyrule’s inhabitants due to their distinct cultural practices. This remarkable tribe is predominantly female, not by choice but because they are almost exclusively women, with a male birth occurring merely once every hundred years. This unusual biological trait and their desire to preserve their culture and autonomy contribute to the Gerudo maintaining their isolation.

As a gamer, I’ve only encountered the sprawling sands of the Gerudo Desert in select installments of the Legend of Zelda series, with its primary settlement, Gerudo Town, appearing even less frequently. However, in the latest adventure, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, there was a unique twist – Link couldn’t set foot in Gerudo Town unless he had completed the “Forbidden City Entry” quest and donned the distinctive Gerudo outfit first.

Based on the laws of the Gerudo tribe, they forbid men from entering their community from outside sources. This rule adds depth to what is arguably one of the most intriguing factions in the Zelda series. However, this tradition may be challenged in the upcoming Zelda game, as its hero possesses a unique advantage over Link.

Unlike Link, Zelda Should Have No Problem Entering Gerudo Town in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Echoes of Wisdom stand out from other games in the series, and it will be exciting to see how this change impacts the storyline.
