Zelda Producer Comments on the Franchise’s Next Game

Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, hinted that the next main game might borrow ideas from the recently released spin-off, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. The Legend of Zelda is a hugely popular and critically praised video game series, known for groundbreaking and highly-rated titles, making each new release a highly anticipated event.

As a huge Zelda fan, I’m used to getting a new game almost every year, whether it’s a big new adventure or a fun spin-off. 2025 was especially great – we got updated versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom for the Switch 2 this summer, and then Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment came out in November! Of course, waiting for a completely new, mainline Zelda game on a home console takes a bit longer. It’s usually about six years between each big release, like with Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.

Eiji Aonuma Comments on the Next Zelda Game

As a huge Zelda fan, I’m already starting to think about what comes after Tears of the Kingdom – it’ll be three years old in 2026! But honestly, we have no clue when Nintendo will announce the next game or what it will even be. Everyone assumes there’ll be a new Zelda on the Switch 2 eventually, but Nintendo hasn’t said anything official yet. It feels like we’re going to be waiting a while to find out what’s next. Interestingly, Eiji Aonuma hinted that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment might offer some clues! He told 4Gamer (IGN reported on it) that the inspiration they got from working with Koei Tecmo on that game could show up in the next Zelda. It’s a bit strange though, because Age of Imprisonment is a totally different style of game than what we normally expect from Zelda. So, it’s hard to say what he means, and I guess we’ll just have to wait for the official reveal to really understand!

The next main Zelda game could take inspiration from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, possibly with large-scale battles against many enemies at once. We might even see cooperative gameplay or the ability to play as characters other than Link. It’s hard to say for sure, but we’re excited to see how Age of Imprisonment influences the next Zelda game when it’s finally revealed.

When Will the Next Zelda Game Be Announced?

Nintendo is known for quickly releasing new Super Mario and Legend of Zelda games on their consoles, often right at launch or shortly after. While no brand-new entries in either series have been announced for the Switch 2 yet, it’s likely we’ll see announcements soon.

In 2026, the Legend of Zelda series will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Nintendo is likely planning a celebration, and a reveal of a new Zelda game would be incredibly exciting for fans. Even a short preview showing that a new game is being developed for the Switch 2 would be a welcome surprise.

Nintendo often holds a Nintendo Direct presentation in February, and that might be when we’ll finally learn about the next Zelda game. If not, they could announce their plans for celebrating Zelda‘s anniversary then. Besides hoping for a brand-new Zelda title, many fans are eager for Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD to be released on the Switch after being exclusive to the Wii U. The 40th anniversary would be an ideal time to make that happen.
