Summary
- Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch 2 won’t support cloud saves.
- The upgraded versions of both Zelda titles will feature faster load times, higher resolution, and new features.
- Other Switch 2 Edition games support cloud saves.
It appears that neither “Zelda: Breath of the Wild” nor “Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” will offer cloud saves on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. While these widely acclaimed games are set to receive upgrades for Nintendo’s new system, fans are worried about their game data from both titles not being backed up as they continue their adventures in Hyrule on the Switch 2.
During the Nintendo Switch 2 live stream in April, fans got their first glimpse of the new system and several games planned for both launch and later release. It was confirmed that Zelda titles would receive an upgrade for the Switch 2, offering faster load times, improved resolution, smoother gameplay, and HDR compatibility. The updated Nintendo Switch app will also offer a new feature called Zelda Notes, which includes navigation assistance, item sharing, daily rewards, and more. Although fans are excited to play as Link on the next Nintendo console, some have noted that the games appear to lack a standard feature now common in gaming.
According to Eurogamer, the online store listings for both Zelda games indicate that these titles do not support the Save Data Cloud backup feature, which is part of the paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Interestingly, this warning is only present on the US and EU versions of the game’s store pages, while the Japanese version still mentions optional cloud saves. This issue doesn’t seem to affect Switch 2 Edition games like Metroid Prime 4 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land, as their store listings don’t include this peculiar warning. At present, players can transfer their save file from the original Switch, but they won’t be able to create a new cloud save or make any additional backups.
The Switch 2 Versions of Both Zelda Games Won’t Support Cloud Saves

Regardless of this minor setback, the enhanced iterations of both ‘Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ and ‘Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’, designed for the Nintendo Switch 2, promise numerous improvements long sought by fans. These new ‘Zelda’ games will introduce achievements that can be monitored via the Nintendo Switch App, and users will benefit from two save files per game. Each game on the Nintendo Switch 2 will retail at $70, but those who already possess the games on the original Switch can upgrade for just $10 per title.
New content for the classic game, “Zelda,” is coming soon to the Nintendo Switch 2, with “Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment” scheduled for release in Winter 2025. This prequel to “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” allows players to take on the role of Princess Zelda as she fights to save her world from the villainous Ganondorf.
