In the epic tale of One Piece, there’s no scarcity of awe-inspiring weapons. Many of the series’ most significant and memorable characters have been associated with legendary armaments that have traveled alongside them on their adventures. These weapons are categorized as ‘Meito’, which essentially represent the strongest and most distinguished weapons within the entire storyline.
Among the Meito, a select few are considered supreme, known as the Supreme Grade Weapons. These are the most potent and robust weapons throughout the entire series, yet there are other Great Grade Weapons that can match their greatness, such as the legendary blade of Wano – Enma – which stands alongside them as one of the greatest in all of One Piece.
Origins Of The Iconic Blade Used By Kozuki Oden And Roronoa Zoro
One of the Greatest Swords In One Piece

Story Arc | Wano |
In the realm of One Piece, there are scarcely any weapons boasting a status and history as illustrious as Enma. Crafted several decades prior to the narrative’s current timeframe by the legendary blacksmith Shimotsuki Kouzaburou, Enma was one of the two exceptional Great Grade Weapons that were forged together. Kouzaburou deemed these masterpieces to be his finest works; the other being Ame no Habakiri.
Because of their built-in characteristics and immense power, no one was able to handle them because they were extremely demanding to manage. But this all shifted when a young Kozuki Oden eventually took possession of them, demonstrating himself as the only one powerful and skilled enough to use them effectively. From then on, these weapons became his primary battle tools and gained a reputation just as legendary as that of Oden himself, accompanying him to Whitebeard’s and Roger’s crews and ultimately, to the edge of the world.
When Oden came back to Wano after a long time, he found it ruled by Kaido. In a fierce duel with Kaido, Oden, known for his legendary power and exceptional sword skills, inflicted lasting wounds on Kaido that he still bears today. The swords Enma and Ame no Habakiri were the only ones capable of causing such wounds to the strongest being in the world. Sadly, after Oden was deceived and defeated, these powerful weapons ended up in the hands of his wife, Kozuki Toki.
Toki stored all the weapons for her offspring over a span of about 20 years. Enma went to Hyori’s care and Ame no Habakiri was saved for Momonosuke. Until the Wano storyline, neither weapon had a wielder. Later in the Wano arc, Hyori passed Enma on to Roronoa Zoro. After returning Shusui to Wano, Zoro received another nearly legendary sword as its replacement.
Enma’s Properties And Likely Future In The Final War
What Makes This Weapon So Strong?
- Enma has a unique ability that has to do with Haki.
- It will also likely get even stronger in the future.
Undeniably, as a Great Grade Blade, Enma’s quality stands among the top-tier swords in the One Piece world. This is because Shimotsuki Kouzaburou, a legendary blacksmith, considers it his finest creation. Given that he also forged the Wado Ichimonji, this is quite an impressive claim. By this standard alone, Enma easily surpasses and outperforms nearly all the weapons in One Piece, with only the Supreme Grades being able to match or exceed it.
Beyond just being unique, this weapon boasts a remarkable trait yet to be observed in any other armament. This innate characteristic amplifies the user’s Haki, making ordinary attacks from it deadly and significantly stronger than they’d normally be. A clear demonstration of this can be seen when Zoro accidentally severed a significant portion of Wano’s coastline. However, it’s crucial to note that its wild nature is the greatest challenge associated with wielding this weapon.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the legend of two extraordinary swords: the celestial slicer, Ame no Habakiri, and the infernal parting blade, Enma! These weapons are said to possess the power to cleave through the very fabric of heaven and hell itself. Truly, their tales echo with an awe-inspiring grandeur that leaves one in a state of reverence.
Enma possesses an inherent ability to activate Haki within its user, a power that could potentially be lethal if overused since it might drain the life force of the user. This makes it suitable only for the strongest and most skilled Haki users. Additionally, as a high-grade weapon, Enma is significantly heavier than an average sword, adding to its destructive potential while making it harder to handle.
Regarding Enma’s destiny, it strongly seems that it is progressing towards becoming a Black Blade. This occurs when a sword accumulates extensive amounts of Haki over time, causing it to be permanently marked with this power. This enhancement greatly boosts the weapon’s might, enabling it to utilize Haki’s strength and features without needing further infusion. Given that Oden and now Zoro have wielded Enma, its future development in this direction appears likely. Additionally, a weapon’s rank can increase with continued use and growth, so it seems probable that Enma will ascend to the Supreme Grade before the conclusion of One Piece.
