- Zoro’s expert swordsmanship allows him to cut through durable materials, giving him a unique edge in combat.
- Zoro’s loyalty to Luffy is unwavering, as he has never left the crew, setting him apart from other members who left due to outside influences.
From an outside perspective, it’s evident that the bond between Roronoa Zoro and Sanji from the One Piece universe is one of the most captivating and endearing rivalries within the expansive realm of anime and manga. Though they often engage in fierce competition, beneath their tough facades lies a mutual respect and underlying concern for each other. This duo’s shared goal is to aid their comrade, Monkey D. Luffy, on his quest to become the next Pirate King.
To put it simply, although these two characters share some common traits, they are fundamentally distinct from one another. The “warped chef” possesses abilities that the “moss-haired” character lacks due to their differences, but conversely, the situation is reversed: Zoro can accomplish things that Sanji cannot, and these instances are particularly well-known.
1. Using Conqueror’s Haki
Sanji Still Hasn’t Been Able To Unlock The Final Type Of Haki
After a time jump, both Sanji and Zoro have demonstrated proficiency in using the fundamental forms of Haki, Armament and Observation. However, during the Wano Country Arc, the Straw Hat Pirates’ swordsman reached a new milestone by unlocking the third and most potent type – Conqueror’s Haki. This wasn’t just a fleeting display against Kaido, but he rapidly mastered it, even managing to imbue his swords with it in his decisive battle against King.
During the same storyline, Sanji obtained some valuable new skills, primarily the genetic upgrades from his Germa 66 raid suit. His Haki remains formidable, but he hasn’t yet mastered Conqueror’s Haki. This power disparity has been a significant point of debate among fans of Zoro and Sanji, as they often compare the two characters.
2. Cutting Durable Materials
Zoro’s Signature Fighting Style Gives Him An Advantage In Specific Situations
Each individual pirate belonging to the Straw Hat crew possesses a unique combat style. For instance, Luffy exhibits wild and exaggerated attacks with his Devil Fruit abilities, while Sanji excels in swift and efficient martial arts moves. As for Roronoa Zoro, he primarily employs his exceptional skills in sword fighting as his primary means of attack.
Due to his exceptional mastery over sharp weapons, coupled with his potent Armament Haki, Zoro has grown incredibly powerful and adept, allowing him to slice through tough materials such as steel and stone, or even the skin and Haki of resilient adversaries. This distinctive talent has proven invaluable in a variety of circumstances, be it in Arabasta, Dressrosa, or Wano. Interestingly, none of his crewmates possess this same ability. While Sanji can demolish most solid objects with his kicks, certain situations necessitate a more precise cutting action with a sword rather than brute force.
3. Wielding Three Blades At The Same Time
Sanji Is Surprisingly Good With Swords, But Zoro Is A Lot Better
Despite primarily opting for hand-to-hand combat using his legs, it’s crucial to note that Sanji is proficient in handling sharp weapons such as knives. Given his exceptional culinary skills, he understands precisely how to slice ingredients, a skill that translates well into weaponry. Notably, the instance where he brandished two large knives against Wanze’s Ramen Kempo stands out as one of his most remarkable and unforgettable feats throughout the series.
While Sanji does possess one talent among many, it’s important to note that Zoro has devoted his entire existence to mastering the art of the sword. This not only signifies a greater proficiency in wielding bladed weapons compared to his rival with golden hair, but also expertise in the Three Sword Style. This unique technique enables him to simultaneously brandish three swords – two in each hand and one between his teeth. In contrast, Sanji lacks this ability, and it’s safe to say he wouldn’t dream of touching a metallic sword with his teeth.
4. Fighting With His Bare Hands
Sanji Only Utilizes His Hands For Cooking, While Zoro Is A Walking Weapon
Previously noted, Sanji, the culinary expert of the Straw Hats, learned from his mentor Zeff not to engage in hand-to-hand combat because he might injure his hands, rendering him incapable of preparing delicious and nourishing meals for his companions. This self-imposed restriction is quite admirable, but it sets Sanji apart significantly from his primary adversary, Roronoa Zoro, in their fighting styles.
Zoro consistently puts his hands and arms on the line each time he fights, as he often wields multiple swords simultaneously. Consequently, he’s unconcerned if they get damaged since he trusts Chopper to mend them. Remarkably, even without any swords, Zoro isn’t hesitant to throw punches at opponents using a unique fighting technique known as the “No Sword Style”. This method is evident in the Long Ring Long Land Arc and an anime-exclusive scene from the Wano Country Arc.
5. Talking Normally To Women
Zoro Treats Women Like Regular Human Beings
Growing up, Roronoa Zoro honed his skills alongside his friend/cousin Shimotsuki Kuina, which means he’s accustomed to engaging with women in a familiar setting. Despite his field being predominantly male-dominated, this aspect of his character shone through when Nami and Nico Robin joined the Straw Hat Pirates; he treated them as equals, albeit initially suspecting Robin due to her past ties with Baroque Works. Moreover, Zoro shares a charming, humorous rivalry with marine captain Tashigi.
In contrast, Sanji appears to have an excessive fascination with females, often attempting to charm or display gallantry towards them. He tends to go out of his way to provide them with special treatment and superior cuisine. This predisposition has been exploited by characters like Nami, Kalifa, or Viola, who have managed to deceive him on multiple occasions. Additionally, Sanji seems to immediately trust Robin upon her joining the crew. It’s worth noting that Sanji is more knowledgeable about women’s tastes and sensitivities compared to Zoro, who shows a striking lack of awareness in this area.
6. Fighting Female Enemies
Sanji’s Biggest Weakness Doesn’t Really Apply To Zoro
Sanji’s affection for women is intense and potentially crippling, leading him to a personal vow (instilled by Zeff) not to physically harm females under any circumstances. This trait mirrors his character and values, yet it has proven to be a significant vulnerability for the entire team on several instances. For instance, he becomes completely incapacitated when confronting female adversaries such as Kalifa from CP9 or Black Maria from the Beasts Pirates, rendering him unable to defend himself in combat.
However, it’s important to note that Roronoa Zoro respects women as equals and this has never been a problem for him. Consequently, he has engaged in combat with several female adversaries. For instance, he has encountered Tashigi multiple times, overpowered both Miss Catherina and Miss Monday during their encounter at Whiskey Peak, and even had a tough battle against Monet on Punk Hazard.
7. Never Leaving Luffy’s Side
Zoro Is Way Too Loyal To Luffy And Never Had To Leave The Crew
At various instances throughout their adventures, individual members of the Straw Hat Pirates chose to depart from the crew under duress. For instance, Nami was compelled to leave during the Arlong Park Arc, Robin had to part ways in Water 7, Sanji left during both Zou and Whole Cake Island arcs. However, these separations don’t necessarily indicate a lack of loyalty to their captain or crew. Unfortunately, they were susceptible to manipulation by cunning and unscrupulous individuals such as Germa 66 and Big Mom, who were able to exploit their apparent vulnerabilities.
In contrast, Roronoa Zoro has transformed into an unwaveringly loyal comrade to Monkey D. Luffy, a bond that has remained strong since his initial joining of the crew. It’s uncertain if others could control him as CP9 did with Robin or Germa 66 with Sanji, but given Zoro’s straightforward and blunt nature compared to his longtime rival, it would be significantly harder to manipulate him in such a manner. While he momentarily departed from the crew for his childhood friend Saga during “One Piece: The Cursed Holy Sword”, it’s important to note that this movie is not considered canonical and has faced criticism for depicting Zoro out of character.
