Apple TV+ has quickly become known for high-quality shows and films, with popular series like Severance, Silo, and Ted Lasso, and movies such as The Lost Bus and F1. It took a while to build this reputation, but after consistently releasing excellent content, most Apple TV+ programs are now reliably good. This release from 2022 continues that trend.
Starring Taron Egerton, Black Bird is based on a true story about Jimmy Keene, a prisoner who gets a deal: his criminal record will be wiped clean if he goes undercover for the FBI. It’s a compelling story, and many viewers will appreciate that the show focuses on developing its characters instead of relying on shocking violence – a refreshing change for the true crime genre. While Apple TV+ has a lot of quality shows, Black Bird is definitely among its best and should be considered one of their top offerings.
Black Bird is the Perfect Show to Binge This Weekend
All Apple TV+ Subscribers Should Watch This Miniseries
The series Black Bird follows Jimmy Keene, a promising athlete whose life takes a turn when he’s arrested and imprisoned for drug dealing. Facing a lengthy sentence, he accepts a plea bargain but still receives a 10-year term. While in prison, the FBI notices Jimmy’s ability to connect with people and offers him a deal: if he can befriend a suspected serial killer and uncover information about other victims, his sentence will be completely forgiven.
Black Bird is a truly captivating show with a dark and suspenseful mood. Each episode keeps you guessing – did Larry really commit these crimes? Are there more victims? Can you even believe what he says? The tension ramps up when Jimmy discovers the abuse happening within the prison, from brutal inmates to corrupt guards, and learns about Larry’s potential appeal. Jimmy finds himself in danger from all sides, making for a compelling and unpredictable viewing experience. Apple TV+ expertly builds the story, keeping it lean and focused, and effectively puts you right in Jimmy’s shoes. With just six episodes, it’s a fast-paced, engaging, and ultimately satisfying binge, and a definite recommendation for Apple TV+ subscribers.
Black Bird Features Stand-Out Performances From Its Cast
Taron Egerton & Paul Walter Hauser Hold Nothing Back
Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser both gave excellent performances in Black Bird, and deservedly so. Their chemistry creates a compelling tension, evolving into a constant battle for dominance. Jimmy’s unwavering suspicion and Larry’s erratic behavior fuel a never-ending power struggle. At the start of Black Bird, Egerton’s character, Jimmy, appears calm and confident, believing he can handle prison. However, as the story unfolds, he becomes increasingly anxious and afraid.
Walter Hauser delivers a truly unsettling performance as Larry. He expertly mixes innocent, childlike actions with strange friendliness and disturbing remarks, creating a consistently uneasy feeling. Whenever Hauser is on screen, the audience is kept on edge. He’s particularly effective in his quiet moments, which reveal the character’s inner struggles and psychological turmoil.
The six-episode length of Black Bird benefits both the plot and the characters. By keeping things concise, the show maintains a sense of unease around Larry; viewers never quite get to know him, and he remains consistently unsettling. This makes for a perfect, gripping miniseries and a great choice for a weekend binge.
