10 Best Horror Game Chase Sequences

Few fears are as deep-rooted as the fear of being pursued by a large, terrifying creature through a dimly lit corridor.”

In this rephrased version, I’ve tried to maintain the intended meaning while using simpler words and phrases that flow smoothly. By replacing “primal” with “deep-rooted,” I aimed to convey that the fear in question is an ancient or instinctual one. Additionally, I replaced “chasing” with “pursued” and “dark hallway” with “dimly lit corridor.” These changes help make the sentence more relatable to a wider audience while still retaining its original meaning.

I’d put it this way: Just like no one enjoys being chased in a game of tag without their agreement, the same goes for real life – especially when the chaser is wielding a big, menacing stick. It’s important to respect others’ boundaries and personal space at all times.

As a game enthusiast, I’ve come across various types of chills while gaming, ranging from the subtly unsettling to the outright terrifying ghostly encounters that leave me jumping out of my seat. Among these, the classic chase sequence remains one of my favorites, where the hunter is always lurking just around the corner, ready to pounce at any moment.

Regardless if it’s a predetermined scene or an interactive gameplay section, a well-crafted chase aims to immerse you as the player into the position of the mouse in a classic game of cat and mouse.

In this situation, it’s not you who is calling the shots; instead, you find yourself as the target, the one being pursued. Your intelligence and quick reactions are the keys to your survival in these hunter’s games.

10. Nemesis In Jill’s Apartment

Resident Evil 3 (2020)

In its original form from Resident Evil 3, the Nemesis-T Type stands as a quintessential example of relentless adversaries in horror games, boasting an immense power that defies all standard means of subjugation.

Back in the good old PlayStation 1 era, Old Man Nemmy was quite daunting, but the 2020 remake takes it up a notch, truly making him feel like a formidable adversary for me as a gamer.

Stepping into this virtual world for the first time, I stroll nonchalantly, seemingly phasing through a wall as if it were nothing more than a mere illusion. Bullets rain down on me, aimed squarely at my face and chest, but they seem to bounce off harmlessly. My focus remains unwavering as I trail Jill, hot on her heels, through the labyrinthine corridors of her apartment complex.

Regardless of the efforts Jill makes to avoid or elude him, Nemesis consistently reappears, tromping across floors and traversing flames, all with the intent of pursuing her trail persistently.

Although much of this series is pre-written, it effectively conveys the intended message: demonstrating the relentless power you’ll encounter.

9. Dr. Trager In The Asylum

Outlast

Medical professionals serve as trusted allies during tough times when health concerns arise. However, their assistance relies on them maintaining a clear and balanced state of mind, something that Dr. Trager from Outlast clearly lacks.

After a brief absence, following your interaction with him and fastening you to a seat, Trager reappears unexpectedly as one of his other “subjects” lets out a loud shout.

In the thrilling world of Outlast, just like any formidable adversary I encounter, I can’t engage in a traditional battle. Instead, my survival strategy mirrors that of a hunted creature – running and seeking refuge in the intricate labyrinth of vents to evade danger.

Trager presents an unusual contrast in his appearance and behavior; despite advancing towards you with menacing oversized scissors, revealing a scarred and gaunt visage, he seems unfazed, constantly cracking jokes and engaging in small talk. It’s as if he’s oblivious to (or unbothered by) his actions.

8. The Baby In The Dollhouse

Resident Evil Village

In Resident Evil Village, the game primarily falls under the genre of Action Horror, providing you with plenty of tools to protect yourself, including formidable adversaries such as Lady Dimitrescu.

An exception to this rule is the Dollhouse section, where Ethan finds himself stripped of all his possessions and weaponry, instead confronted with solving puzzles within a labyrinthine cellar.

Towards the close of this part, an enormous, terrifying infant appears in the corridor out of nowhere, causing us to hurriedly retreat towards the elevator as it lets out bloodcurdling shrieks nearby.

It turns out that what you’ve just witnessed was an illusion orchestrated by Donna’s Fungus. Although it might not have been a real event, the traumatic experience of being consumed by the Baby proved lethal for Ethan, and considering his reaction, it seems quite plausible.

7. Huggy Wuggy In The Factory

Poppy Playtime

It’s commonly believed that Five Nights at Freddy’s kick-started the Mascot Horror genre, but it was probably Poppy Playtime and its primary villain, Huggy Wuggy, that truly established its presence in popular culture.

In the opening episode of the game, Huggy makes an early appearance, disguising himself as a statue within the Playtime gift shop. Later on, he mysteriously reappears once a security door is opened, his mouth wide open to expose sharp teeth.

To get away from Huggy, you should quickly hide within the confined network of the factory’s conveyor belts, navigating through them by moving up and over the belts, and darting past closing doors, ultimately reaching the interior areas located on the opposite side.

Throughout the journey, Huggy constantly stays close behind, intermittently appearing from different hallways, making you frequently retrace your steps due to his unexpected appearances.

If you fail to promptly pull the big crate down to shatter the pathway at the end, he’ll likely still manage to bite you.

6. Gatherers Throughout The Castle

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

In the initial version of Amnesia, Alexander’s primary lieutenants, known as The Gatherers, would collect hapless innocents for a variety of sinister tests and research.

In the game, you frequently come across two groups – Grunts and Brutes – who typically move around in pairs, guarding the numerous corridors within the castle.

In various interactions, whether guided or spontaneous, or even some delusional episodes may occur, but the main pattern remains consistent: once they see you, they’ll pursue relentlessly, their grotesque cheeks billowing with each gust of wind.

As a gamer, I’ve been dealing with an annoying issue regarding these creatures called the Gatherers. It’s not cool how staring at them too long without taking action depletes my Sanity Meter. This means I can’t keep turning around to check if they’re still lurking behind me, making every moment a nail-biting experience!

In a chase situation, it’s essential to make efforts to evade the pursuer by losing their visual track and finding concealed spots, often relying on instincts and smart guesses about where they might not look for you.

5. The Teacher

Little Nightmares 2

Have you ever felt like a teacher has given you that piercing stare, suggesting I’m causing a disturbance in class, as if they possess the power to turn me into smoke with their gaze?

Experience the chilling sensation of being under constant scrutiny, even when trying to hide, as the teacher’s unusually elongated neck allows for an unnerving gaze. That’s the eerie predicament you’ll find yourself in while playing Little Nightmares 2.

In the school setting, Mono initially interacts with what appears to be an ordinary teacher during a regular class. However, upon an unintentional noise from Mono, this teacher transforms into a pursuer, chasing him across the rooftops and ventilation systems. As she does so, she elongates her neck and forcefully breaks through walls and furniture with great violence.

As I’m playing this game, it’s downright eerie, and what makes it worse is that the Teacher seems to be chasing me relentlessly. Yet, no matter the situation, her facial expression remains unchanged – a constant, slightly wrinkled smile that sends a chill down my spine.

There’s a unique, uncanny quality – something almost inhuman – that makes both the Teacher and the majority of this game’s monsters so hauntingly frightening. This distinctive wrongness is what keeps them terrifying over time.

4. Pyramid Head In The Hospital

Silent Hill 2 (2001)

In simpler terms, Pyramid Head is one of the well-known antagonists from the horror video game series, Silent Hill. Despite appearing with a pyramid-shaped structure instead of a face, his terrifying nature proves that context can make even the seemingly ordinary frightening.

In Silent Hill 2, James encounters Pyramid Head a couple of times initially in a fleeting manner, but it’s not until he ventures into the basement of Brookhaven Hospital that Pyramid Head presents himself as genuinely terrifying.

He quietly appears, without any grand fanfare, and starts exploring the labyrinthine passages of the basement.

It’s not too challenging for you to outpace him alone, but there’s Maria with you, who isn’t as quick. You’ll need to look back every now and then and give him a few taps to maintain a decent gap, all while heading towards the elevator.

Indeed, despite everything that transpired, the elevator shut unexpectedly fast, leaving Maria in his grasp nonetheless. Oops.

3. Laura’s Many Encounters

The Evil Within

Have you ever encountered a spider in your kitchen that seemed to dart towards you unexpectedly? Imagine if that spider were actually a colossal version of Spider-Woman instead.

In The Evil Within, the sensation you experience when Laura chases you is akin to encountering a relentless, multi-armed specter. This creature, an agonizing screamer, is nothing but a monstrous, invulnerable manifestation of Ruvik’s deceased sister, entirely indifferent to gunfire.

Throughout the game, Sebastian frequently comes across her at various instances. She tends to appear dramatically, emerging from puddles of blood or deceased bodies.

During the initial encounter, your only option might be to flee, but in the subsequent one, you could momentarily disable her by guiding her towards the bulky, built-in burners for a temporary solution.

Despite this, Laura hasn’t given up on you yet, as she makes one last appearance to pursue Seb through a lengthy corridor, heading towards an elevator for an escape.

2. The Bear In The Service Station

Condemned 2: Bloodshot

Bears appear adorable and soft if observed at a secure distance, yet a fundamental law of nature dictates that they must never be interfered with in any way.

Generally, bears tend to be satisfied with things as they are, but the bear in Condemned 2 seems to disagree with the tranquil attitude. Instead, it prefers a more active or combative approach.

In an old, deserted gas station, Ethan comes across a Bear that had earlier attacked some unfortunate individuals, and immediately, it appears as though the Bear is seeking more prey.

The Bear is too powerful to confront directly or slow down; instead, it’s best to steer clear of it until you find some explosive barrels and a shotgun to destroy it from a safe distance.

An opportunity that unfortunately turns out to be a mere illusion, since the Bear promptly grabs Ethan and leads him into the woods before disappearing elsewhere.

1. Scissorman Throughout The Manor

Clock Tower

A chase scene reminiscent of horror games can be traced as far back as 1995 with the game Clock Tower and its villain, Scissorman.

Considering today’s gaming norms, Scissorman might appear somewhat comical wearing a small school uniform and enormous hedge trimmers. However, imagine for a minute being a ’90s video game player instead.

In the game you’re playing, your character has minimal control, and all of a sudden, a strange creature armed with scissors appears from thin air, starting to approach menacingly towards you.

Regardless of whether he’s not acting swiftly or displaying obvious threatening behavior like contemporary monsters, the intense fear that arises from finding yourself in a situation where you’re not entirely in control will undoubtedly leave an impact.

As a devoted gamer, I’ve always admired the enigmatic character, Scissorman. He purposefully stayed hidden, allowing nemeses like Nemesis to chase, which is a crucial element in shaping gaming history.
