10 Resident Evil Requiem Story Details That Show the Series Is Finally Betting Bigger in Story

The Resident Evil series has evolved significantly from its humble beginnings as a cheesy B-movie. By the time of Resident Evil Requiem, the story had become incredibly complex and doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. Requiem successfully brought together numerous plotlines into a cohesive and engaging narrative.

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest risks the game took with its story, and how those choices are setting the stage for even more complicated and frightening events in the world of Resident Evil.

Since this contains key story details from Resident Evil Requiem, be warned: spoilers are ahead.

10. Zeno

The Wesker Children

Many believe Zeno was simply a copy of Albert Wesker, but his claim of being present during the fall of Raccoon City suggests otherwise. He’s probably one of the “Wesker Children” – superpowered individuals created as part of Project W. Oswell Spencer originally intended to transfer his mind into these bioweapons, but when that didn’t work, he trained them to serve as his top commanders, alongside Albert and Alex Wesker.

The story introduced a concept in Resident Evil 5 and further developed it in Resident Evil Revelations 2, but it was largely forgotten. Now, with Resident Evil Requiem and the reintroduction of Zeno, the series has created opportunities for more villains like Wesker to appear in future games. This begs the question: how many more characters with Wesker’s abilities are out there?

9. Spencer’s Redemption

The Man Who Would Be God

Oswell Spencer, who started the company Umbella, was a ruthless man responsible for countless deaths through his dangerous bioweapons research. Despite his terrible actions, he seemed to try and make amends towards the end of his life. While he probably knew he couldn’t fully atone for what he’d done, he at least attempted to do better.

Okay, so it hit me – Spencer totally knew Wesker was going to take him out. That’s why he sent Grace to live with Alyssa, to keep her safe. It’s kinda heartbreaking, because Grace was like, his last hope for the future, for everything. And that’s why he created Elpis, the cure – a way to try and fix all the mess he made with the T-Virus. Seriously, what a twist! But honestly, knowing Spencer, I bet there are still a ton of secrets he left hidden somewhere.

8. Alyssa’s Expanded Role

More Than Just Grace’s Mother

Alyssa Ashcroft started as a fairly ordinary survivor in Resident Evil Outbreak – a resourceful reporter, but not particularly memorable. Some fans weren’t even sure the Outbreak games were part of the official Resident Evil storyline until Resident Evil Requiem featured Alyssa prominently, giving her a crucial role that completely reshaped the narrative.

Alyssa was caught up in a much larger conspiracy than just the events in Raccoon City and involving the Umbrella Corporation. Her investigation led her into conflict with a dangerous criminal organization called Connections. A document discovered in the Baker House during Resident Evil 7 revealed she was researching the murders caused by the mold – and likely those responsible for creating it, Connections. This connection becomes clearer when you consider the events in Requiem, which ultimately linked everything together.

7. Mother Miranda’s Influence

The Ominous Painting

Near the end of Resident Evil Village, it’s revealed that Mother Miranda, the main villain, was the one who originally taught Oswell Spencer about the mysterious mold and how to create bioweapons. Spencer was obsessed with achieving godlike power through these experiments, and his time learning from Miranda allowed him to perfect his skills before establishing Umbrella Corporation as a front for his dangerous research.

In Resident Evil Requiem, details in Spencer’s office – like Miranda’s painting and a bottle of Lady Dimitrescu’s wine – hint that Spencer and Miranda were in contact and knew about each other’s dark deeds before they died. This clever addition to the game’s backstory was excellent, and we’re excited to see where the Resident Evil story goes next.

6. The Tragedy of Meryl Branagh

Marvin Had a Daughter

Okay, so playing as Leon in Resident Evil, I always felt bad for Marvin. He was the first officer who really helped me out when I showed up in Raccoon City, but he got infected and… well, you know, turned into a zombie. It was rough having to put him down. Then, when I went back to the police station in Resident Evil Requiem, I paid my respects. But finding out more about what really happened to him? It just made his story even more heartbreaking, honestly. It really stuck with me.

As Leon explores the city, he discovers messages from a girl named Meryl. She’s trying to reach the train station to be with her injured father. Through her notes, Meryl recounts being saved by a kind neighbor who later gave his life to protect her. The clues eventually lead Leon to the Kendo Gun Shop, where he finds Meryl’s shoes. It becomes clear that Meryl didn’t make it to her father, and Leon sadly discovers that her father was a man named Marvin.

It’s a stark and impactful moment for both Leon and the player, particularly for those who enjoyed Resident Evil 2. This kind of emotional storytelling is where Resident Evil truly shines, demonstrating that the series is strongest when it focuses on the personal experiences of ordinary people affected by the dangers of bioterrorism.

5. Body Swapping and Mind Transfer

Revelations and Requiem

The idea of swapping minds or transferring consciousness first appeared in the Resident Evil series with Spencer’s plan to achieve immortality using his bioweapons. This concept returned in Resident Evil Revelations 2, where Alex Wesker attempted to transfer her mind into a young girl named Natalya. The game’s ending hints she might have been partially successful, as Natalya begins to recite quotes from the writings of Franz Kafka.

Resident Evil Requiem features a flashback showing Umbrella Corporation’s cloning experiments, which took place after they created the Wesker Children. These experiments failed catastrophically, causing the clones to become violent and use their super strength and fast healing to attack Umbrella staff. The story also connects to Resident Evil Village, revealing that the Megamycete fungus can hold people’s minds, as seen with both Miranda’s daughter and Ethan Winters.

Resident Evil seems to be building towards a major storyline, and recent ideas suggest characters might be able to return from the dead in new bodies. This creates exciting potential for future stories and allows for unexpected character reappearances.

4. BSAA Civil War

Blue Umbrella and Hound Wolf Squad

In Resident Evil Village, Chris Redfield is shown distancing himself from the BSAA, the organization he co-founded to combat bioterrorism. He was upset that the BSAA used its own bioweapons against Mother Miranda, leading him to confront his former colleagues in Europe. Previously, in Resident Evil 7, Chris was also unhappy with the BSAA’s collaboration with the reformed Blue Umbrella.

In Resident Evil Requiem, Leon discusses a growing division with Sherry Birkin, and they both worry about Chris Redfield’s whereabouts after his team, the Hound Wolf Squad, saves them. Chris’s unit seems to be working with the BSAA again, but shortly after, the Connections attack the BSAA and steal something valuable before the Hound Wolf Squad can intervene. This situation appears to be setting up plot points for a future Resident Evil game – potentially Resident Evil 10 – and feels like a long-developing storyline that needs a satisfying resolution.

3. Tall Oaks

The Other Lost City

Resident Evil Requiem revisits Raccoon City almost thirty years after it was destroyed by a bomb, which eliminated most of the zombies and monsters. However, Raccoon City wasn’t the only American city lost to a bio-terrorist attack; Tall Oaks suffered the same fate in Resident Evil 6. Because that game wasn’t as well-received as Resident Evil 2 and 3, Tall Oaks hasn’t been discussed much since.

I think the series is missing a chance to expand its story. While Raccoon City is important, it shouldn’t be the only location with zombies. The town of Tall Oaks had a rich backstory, with connections to both the Umbrella Corporation and a secretive group called the Family. It’s time for the Resident Evil series to revisit and integrate these intriguing plot points into the main storyline.

2. Dead Presidents

The Connections Conspiracy

I first started piecing things together about the Connections back in Resident Evil 7. They seemed like this mysterious group that was behind everything, creating Eveline – the main bad guy – using the mold, and they were working with both Mother Miranda and Lucas Baker. Then, playing Resident Evil Requiem, it all clicked. Turns out they’d been secretly benefiting from Umbrella’s research for ages, and they were actually rivals with Spencer, constantly fighting with him behind the scenes.

Zeno, a leader within the mysterious Connections organization, admitted they assassinated a US President who was going to reveal their existence – a detail mirroring the death of President Benford in Resident Evil 6. Previously, we were led to believe a different group, the “Family,” killed Benford to safeguard American interests. This doesn’t seem like a story change, but rather evidence that the Connections and the Family are linked, and that Capcom plans to further develop this complex conspiracy.

1. Leon’s Wedding Ring

Sorry, Internet, He’s Taken

This could be the biggest point of contention for fans. Leon Kennedy is now married, which has already upset some players. Everyone is wondering who his wife is – is it Ada Wong, or someone new? Was it a marriage based on love, or is there a hidden reason? The upcoming downloadable content for Resident Evil Requiem will probably offer some answers, but it’s already sparked a lot of online debate and guessing.

Capcom is taking a big risk by moving the story in a surprising direction. For years, fans have wondered if Leon and Ada Wong would ever become a couple, and this could finally be the moment they’ve been waiting for. However, things might not go as expected, and the outcome could be heartbreaking – particularly if Ada’s secret backers turn out to be the masterminds behind everything.
