Minor spoilers ahead for The Sheep Detectives.
2026 is shaping up to be an excellent year for movies, with big titles like 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Sam Raimi’s Send Help, and the sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary already released or on the way. However, a surprising success has emerged: the mystery comedy The Sheep Detectives. It was written by Craig Mazin, known for The Last of Us and Chernobyl, and directed by Kyle Balda, who worked on Minions.
Featuring bright animation and a fantastic cast including Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Bryan Cranston, and Regina Hall, The Sheep Detectives manages to make its unusual premise genuinely funny and enjoyable. While it might not appeal to everyone, the movie is quickly becoming one of the year’s best and is definitely worth seeing.
The Sheep Detectives Boasts a Weird But Entertaining Premise
It’s A Bizarre And Hilarious Watch For Viewers of All Ages
The Sheep Detectives begins with shepherd George Hardy, played by Hugh Jackman, who enjoys reading detective novels to his sheep every night. George believes the sheep don’t understand, but they secretly follow every detail of the mysteries he reads. When George dies unexpectedly, his sheep realize it wasn’t an accident. Inspired by the detective stories George shared, the sheep decide to team up and solve the mystery themselves.
In their search for answers, a flock of sheep leave the familiar fields and explore their quirky English town, meeting a cast of strange characters – from suspicious locals to a bumbling police officer, and several potential suspects. The Sheep Detectives playfully uses familiar murder mystery elements like misleading clues and surprising turns, creating a show that’s both funny and surprisingly thoughtful. While the idea of sheep solving crimes is ridiculous, the series takes its investigation seriously, balancing silly humor with real suspense. By the end, the mystery’s resolution feels completely satisfying and well-deserved.
The Sheep Detectives Has Rightfully Earned Its 90% Rotten Tomatoes Rating
The Movie’s Worth Every Dollar Thanks to Its All-Star Cast And Craig Mazin’s Great Writing
Many family movies today use jokes that point out how silly they are, but The Sheep Detectives takes a different approach. It’s a genuinely clever mystery with a wonderfully strange idea, and the film fully embraces it to create a funny and heartwarming story. Beyond the laughs and detective work, it’s a touching film about dealing with loss, the importance of friendship, and protecting those around you.
By the end of the movie, viewers will truly care about the sheep and what happens with the investigation into George’s murder. This genuine emotional connection turns The Sheep Detectives from a strange and funny comedy into a film you won’t soon forget. A fantastic cast is largely responsible for this success, taking the movie far beyond what audiences might initially expect. Hugh Jackman leads the talented group as George, supported by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, Chris O’Dowd, and Nicholas Braun.
The actors all deliver subtle and compelling performances, and they share a fantastic on-screen connection, which really makes The Sheep Detectives enjoyable to watch. Considering the film features a talented cast and impressive visual effects, it cost around $80 million to produce. Fortunately, the UK government helped cover about $17 million of that cost through a film incentive program.
