The new cooperative game 4:Loop, coming to PlayStation 5 and PC, recently showcased its gameplay in a trailer during the February State of Play. The trailer gave players a look at the game’s roguelike elements and hinted at an exciting boss battle.
The game 4:Loop was unveiled at the 2025 Game Awards by Mike Booth and J.J. Abrams, who shared details about its creation. J.J. Abrams is a famous director known for films like the 2009 Star Trek movie, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker. Mike Booth is the lead designer and a key creator of Left 4 Dead. Currently, Booth serves as the chief creative officer at Bad Robot Games, which is part of J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company.
4:Loop Reveals New Gameplay Trailer
The gameplay trailer for 4:Loop, along with a recent PlayStation Blog post by Mike Booth, explains how the game works. Players start by joining forces and choosing a mission from the ‘Probability Map’ – a board filled with icons. Each icon represents a different mission with its own rewards and challenges. This feature is similar to games like Slay the Spire and Inscryption, where planning your path is important. Players need to carefully choose missions to collect as many resources and upgrades as possible before facing a boss.
Once a team chooses a mission, they’re instantly transported to the location and given specific tasks to complete. These tasks, as described in Booth’s blog, might involve hacking alien tech, gathering important resources, or rescuing survivors who can give the team powerful improvements. No matter the mission, players will face waves of attacking alien robots called Killbots. If a player is defeated, they’re quickly brought back into the action, but with a new injury – a broken bone – that can only be healed at a Rest Stop. The entire team doesn’t have to survive; as long as one player completes the mission, the team can continue.
After finishing a mission in 4:Loop, players return to the Homebase to buy new equipment and weapons, upgrade their gear, and equip new items. They can also find a shop during a mission that offers similar rewards using the in-game currency, ‘Cache.’ Once players complete a few missions in a section of the Probability Map, they’ll face a boss battle. Currently, 4:Loop features three unique bosses, each requiring different strategies to defeat. The State of Play trailer showed one of these bosses: a large, Rubik’s Cube-like enemy with constantly changing weak points.
Near the conclusion of his PlayStation Blog post, Mike Booth discussed the future updates for the game 4:Loop, stating:
After you purchase the game, we’ll continue to improve it based on your feedback. We want you to enjoy playing, share it with your friends, and help us create a strong and active community.
While a firm release date for 4:Loop hasn’t been announced, interested players can soon get an early look by joining the game’s Closed Beta. Sign-ups are open now, and the beta will begin in Spring 2026 for both PlayStation 5 and PC. At first, the beta will only be available to players in North America, but more regions will be added as the testing period continues.
