In the world of Solo Leveling, Sung Jinwoo rises from being one of the weakest hunters – initially ranked E and struggling to finish dungeons on his own – to become the strongest hunter and the second Shadow Monarch. Very few, if anyone, could defeat him in a fight.
After Sung Jinwoo became a Player and his powers grew, he often faced powerful enemies. However, some characters in the Solo Leveling series never got the opportunity to battle him directly.
Christopher Reed
National Level Hunter From America
Wow, Christopher Reed was a seriously powerful Hunter! He was ranked as the third strongest nationally in the whole world, and number two in America! As a human Hunter, he was just off the charts – he could wield Fire Magic, had this incredible ability called Ruler’s Authority, and even manifest a Spiritual Body, among a ton of other things. It’s such a shame he died relatively early in Solo Leveling. Norma actually had a dream where she saw his death coming, and tried to warn him, but… well, it was unavoidable.
Because Christopher Reed and Sung Jinwoo never met, they never had a chance to fight each other. Reed was killed quickly by the Monarchs, even though he possessed the power of a Ruler, suggesting Sung Jinwoo would likely win if they had battled. Despite his short time in the story, Christopher Reed remains remembered as one of the most powerful human Hunters.
Liu Zhigang
National Level Hunter From China
I’ve noticed that Liu Zhigang, who’s considered the second-best Hunter at the national level, hasn’t really crossed paths with Sung Jinwoo, so they’ve never fought. He operates out of China and is incredibly powerful – only surpassed globally by Thomas Andre. People say his abilities are reminiscent of a piece of a Ruler’s power.
Liu Zhigang lives in China, which explains why he and Sung Jinwoo haven’t crossed paths much. They also don’t have any conflicts, so there’s no reason they would fight. Furthermore, after Sung Jinwoo became a Shadow Monarch, Liu Zhigang likely wouldn’t stand a chance against him.

Thomas Andre
National Level Hunter From America
Thomas Andre is considered the world’s most powerful Hunter. Originally from America, his abilities are comparable to those who wield a fragment of a Ruler’s power. He’s an incredibly skilled fighter with exceptional speed, resilience, and the ability to manifest a spiritual body, among other strengths.
Thomas Andre and Sung Jinwoo had a brief disagreement, but it wasn’t a real battle. Thomas tried to impress with his skills, but Sung Jinwoo quickly proved to be much more powerful, ending the encounter swiftly. Even at his best, Thomas Andre, a top-ranked Hunter, would likely be defeated by Sung Jinwoo.
The Rulers
Angelic Warriors
The Rulers are an ancient warrior race originally created by a supreme being, and they are the main enemies of the Monarchs. Interestingly, Sung Jinwoo ends up teaming up with The Rulers to defeat the Monarchs, so he never actually fights them. Because both The Rulers and Sung Jinwoo share the same goal – protecting humanity and preventing destruction – a conflict between them wouldn’t make sense.
The Rulers typically appear through human hosts, like Go Gun-Hee, and generally operate from the shadows. They use these hosts to carry out their plans and also employ Blessings to safeguard humanity when necessary. Should a Ruler ever directly confront Sung Jinwoo, it would likely be a very challenging fight for him.
Ashborn
First Shadow Monarch
Ashborn, the first Shadow Monarch, transferred his powers to Sung Jinwoo, making him the new one. He’s essentially responsible for Jinwoo’s strength and has always supported him. Because Ashborn wants Jinwoo to surpass him and become a powerful successor, they won’t ever fight – and likely never would.
Ashborn decides to mentor Jinwoo, watching him become increasingly powerful. While Ashborn could probably win against Jinwoo, especially early in Jinwoo’s rise as the Shadow Monarch, a fight between them wouldn’t make sense. Ashborn is a highly skilled and experienced warrior, and even with Jinwoo’s rapid improvement, he would be a tough opponent to overcome.
