As a huge Pokémon fan, I was blown away by this artist’s take on what Paras could evolve into if the cicada part lived on instead of the mushroom! It wasn’t just one idea either – they actually created four totally different evolution concepts, which is incredible. It’s so cool to see them explore what could have been!
Paras, often called the Mushroom Pokemon, was first introduced in the original Pokemon Red and Blue games. It’s a Bug and Grass type known for the unique, parasitic mushrooms that grow on its back—called “tochukaso” in the Pokedex. When Paras evolves into Parasect at level 24, these mushrooms take complete control, turning it into a zombie-like Pokemon with a famously eerie cry in the Pokemon series.
Pokemon Fan Art Ponders How Paras Could Survive Without Its Mushroom
Fans often note that Paras and Parasect have some of the most unsettling descriptions in the Pokemon Pokedex. One artist wondered what Paras might look like if it evolved without the mushrooms on its back. On the Pokemon subreddit, a user named KosukeSukeP shared four ideas for how Paras could evolve if the insect part thrived and the mushroom died. Each concept features unique traits. One version, pictured in the top left, evolves into a winged cicada similar to the Pokemon Ninjask. Another concept shows a much larger evolution, with Paras’ face covered in soft hair and a flower on its head.
Paras is depicted holding a mushroom-capped staff and wearing a wizard-like hat also made of a mushroom. This design evokes classic magical characters from role-playing games, like wizards or mages. In a recent artwork, KosukeSukeP showed Paras with a tough, shell-like covering and mushrooms grown long like antennae. Pokemon fans loved these new designs, noting how each evolution felt unique. One fan even said it was “cooler than the official version,” and appreciated the idea that Paras could live either without the mushroom or in a mutually beneficial relationship with it.
Pokemon Fans Discuss a Better Future for Paras
Fans have been speculating about potential type changes for Paras if it were to evolve differently. While most agree it would likely remain a Bug-type, some have suggested Bug/Fairy or Bug/Ghost as alternative combinations. Since Paras is currently a Bug and Grass type, altering its types would affect how effective it is in battles for Pokemon trainers, changing its strengths and weaknesses.
