Most popular anime series have a standout story arc that really defines them and contributes to their fame. For the popular shonen anime Bleach, that arc is the Soul Society Arc. It followed a lighter, introductory arc called the Agent of the Shinigami Arc, and was then followed by the much longer Arrancar saga. While the fight against Sosuke Aizen was exciting, many fans consider the Soul Society Arc to be the best story arc written by creator Tite Kubo.
Many other anime series feature story arcs comparable to Bleach’s Soul Society Arc in terms of quality and style. These arcs, much like Bleach’s, are filled with exciting battles, introduce new characters, and deepen the existing combat system. Plus, the events in these arcs often have significant, long-term effects on the characters and their stories.
The Chunin Exam Arc Introduced Many Classic Ninjas
Naruto, Sasuke, Gaara, and Rock Lee Were Standouts
It’s common to compare the popular anime series – often called the ‘big three’ – and how their stories unfold. They all generally start with an introductory episode for the main character, then a shorter story arc to build momentum, before launching into the arc that truly kicks off the adventure. In Naruto, this was the Chunin Exam Arc, which significantly expanded the possibilities within the series.
The early arcs of Naruto introduced exciting new ninja abilities like Water Release techniques and the unique Kekkei Genkai, along with the powerful Sharingan. However, the Chunin Exam Arc really raised the stakes, bringing together ninja from all the different nations to compete. This led to some incredibly intense and personal battles, and fans were constantly surprised by the debut of new and impressive jutsu. The arc also marked a turning point for the story, particularly with the introduction of Orochimaru and his schemes, including bestowing the Curse Seal upon Sasuke.
The UA Sports Festival Arc Was a Carnival of Amazing Quirks
Sports and Tournament Arcs Combined With Superhero Flair
My Hero Academia is structured around many story arcs, some shorter than others, which help advance the plot, develop characters, and showcase the unique combat abilities of those with Quirks. When comparing My Hero Academia to the peak of Bleach, the UA Sports Festival Arc stands out. This arc quickly introduces a large number of new characters and fighting styles as Deku participates in a major tournament.
I always enjoy seeing arcs like these unfold because they really let every character shine, regardless of whether they succeed or fail. It’s exciting to watch both the main heroes, like Ichigo, Deku, and Shoto Todoroki, and even the supporting ones step up and push themselves to unlock new abilities. For example, Ichigo achieved his Bankai during the Soul Society Arc in Bleach, and Deku discovered new Smash techniques during the UA Sports Festival Arc – he even helped Shoto embrace his fire powers in the process.
The Yorknew Island Arc Ushered in the Phantom Troupe
Kurapika Showed Chrollo Lucilfer His Wrath
The Hunter x Hunter series really took off with the Yorknew City Arc, introducing the dangerous and memorable Phantom Troupe. While Bleach‘s Soul Society Arc focused on a large group of enemies for Ichigo and his friends, the Phantom Troupe relentlessly challenged Gon, Killua, and Kurapika. Although the Nen power system wasn’t fully explored yet, it was evident that Gon and Kurapika would need to develop incredible new abilities just to stand a chance.
Kurapika unleashed a powerful ability, transforming his Nen into a unique weapon specifically designed to combat the Phantom Troupe. Similar to Sosuke Aizen in Bleach, Chrollo Lucilfer, the leader of the Phantom Troupe, is a calm and detached villain in the Yorknew City Arc. He commands a highly skilled group and isn’t easily threatened by heroes like Kurapika or Ichigo.
The Marineford Arc Was a Who’s Who of Major One Piece Characters
Like Aizen, Blackbeard Swooped in to Turn the World Upside Down
The Alabasta Saga in One Piece felt like a turning point, similar to the Soul Society Arc in Bleach – it was the first time Luffy’s journey really felt expansive. Alabasta introduced a lot of new characters and powers, surpassing everything we’d seen before in the East Blue Saga. However, the full scope of the One Piece world didn’t truly unfold until later, which makes sense considering the series’ grand scale and careful storytelling. The massive Marineford Arc, a truly defining moment for the series, took a while to arrive for these very reasons.
The recent battle was a massive turning point, bringing together all the key players and introducing some new ones, as the hero struggled to stay alive amidst the chaos. Luffy realized he understood what Ichigo had experienced – being powerful enough to survive, but not strong enough to defeat the main villain. Like Aizen before him, Captain Blackbeard proved to be an overwhelming opponent, securing a surprising victory at the last moment. While Aizen was satisfied with simply stealing the Hogyoku, Blackbeard went a step further, claiming Captain Whitebeard’s powerful Tremor-Tremor Fruit before making his escape.
The Infinity Castle Arc Showcased the Best Hashira and Upper Moons
Casualties Built Up on Both Sides
Many popular anime series, like Bleach, feature a major turning point about a third of the way through the story. Demon Slayer took a different approach. While the Mugen Train Arc was a significant moment – Tanjiro’s team defeated Upper Moon 1, and Kyojuro fought Akaza, the first Upper Moon – Demon Slayer needed to escalate the stakes even further to match the impact of Bleach’s Soul Society Arc.
The Soul Society Arc featured a large scope with numerous conflicts and introductions, whereas Demon Slayer maintained a more focused approach until the climax. That’s when Muzan Kibutsuji, the main villain, trapped everyone in his Infinity Castle, leading to a series of intense battles. Both demon slayers and powerful demons fought and fell, and even the hero couldn’t guarantee success. Interestingly, both arcs share a similar theme: the hero relentlessly pursuing a rematch with a bitter enemy – Ichigo against Captain Byakuya Kuchiki, and Tanjiro Kamado determined to defeat Akaza, no matter the cost.
The First Class Mage Exam Saw Dozens of Talented Wizards Compete For a Promotion
Frieren Was the Strongest, But Other Wizards Stole the Show
Because Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a slow-paced series that focuses on the simple pleasures of life, it took a while for it to have an arc similar to the Soul Society arc in Bleach. For a long time, Frieren, like Ichigo, just traveled around defeating monsters as she encountered them. But eventually, a competition was bound to happen, and that came in the form of the First Class Mage Exam, which finally presented Frieren with a real challenge.
This story arc introduced a lot of new characters, each with unique magical abilities and fighting styles – like Übel’s precise attacks, Wirbel’s aggressive methods, and the surprisingly effective teamwork of Kanne and Lawine. Unlike some other series, such as Bleach with its powerful transformations like Bankai, Frieren didn’t gain a huge power boost. However, viewers of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End finally got to see what she’s capable of when truly challenged, even facing off against a mirror image of herself.
