6 Times Demon Slayer Disappointed Fans

Despite being incredibly popular, Demon Slayer isn’t without its flaws. While the animation by studio UFOtable is fantastic and the show has a genuinely moving emotional center, it ultimately falls short of being truly great. Many viewers were let down by some weak moments and unrealized potential.

Certain moments in Demon Slayer really excited fans, like Kyojuro Rengoku’s last battle and the intense fight against Daki and Gyutaro. However, other scenes didn’t quite live up to expectations, and some even seem silly looking back. Because of this, there’s a lot of anticipation for the final two Demon Slayer movies to deliver a strong ending and make those earlier disappointments less noticeable.

Honestly, Demon Slayer is a fast-moving action anime that avoids unnecessary detours or overly long storylines – something that sets it apart from older popular series like Naruto or Bleach. While this quick pace keeps things exciting, it sometimes means characters don’t get the development they deserve, like with Shinobu Kocho, the heartbreaking Insect Hashira whose story felt rushed.

Shinobu didn’t have many opportunities to fight, and her battle against Doma, one of the strongest demons, seemed unwinnable. While it would have made sense for her character to die in a meaningful way to raise the emotional impact, her death in the Infinity Train movie felt too quick and underdeveloped. It felt like she was simply used to emphasize how dangerous Muzan’s castle was, rather than being given a proper conclusion to her story.

Gyokko Felt Like a Step Down After the Entertainment District Arc

Gyokko’s Diamond-Hard Scales Meant Nothing to Muichiro

Similar to many action-packed anime shows, Demon Slayer steadily increased the strength of its villains, which led to the introduction of the powerful Upper Moons. When Gyutaro and his sister Daki appeared as a team, sharing the title of Upper Moon 6, they lived up to the hype. Unfortunately, the next demon revealed, Gyokko, wasn’t quite as impressive.

Daki and Gyutaro were incredibly resilient – as long as either of them remained alive, they could survive any attack. This should have placed them higher among the Upper Moon demons. However, when the ranks were determined, only Gyutaro was considered, which made Gyokko feel inadequate. Gyokko was defeated by just one Hashira, Muichiro, and couldn’t even kill him. Akaza, on the other hand, easily defeated his Hashira opponent in a duel.

The To the Swordsmith Village Movie Didn’t Feel Like a Proper Movie

It Was No Mugen Train

The first Demon Slayer movie, Mugen Train, really raised the bar for anime films based on existing series. It was a great way to continue the story while also giving fans an amazing experience in theaters. Because of that, people were excited for the To the Swordsmith Village movie, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype.

This wasn’t really a movie at all – it felt more like a collection of episodes from Demon Slayer stitched together. A large portion of it just replayed the final episodes of Season 2, which fans had already seen. While the extended first episode of Season 3 was new, it wasn’t enough content to justify a full movie. Overall, it came across as a marketing ploy, or like the creators didn’t respect their audience.

Season 4 Was Too Slow and Straightforward

I have to admit, the fourth season of Demon Slayer wasn’t bad, exactly, but it definitely didn’t live up to its potential. The story felt unusually slow and peaceful, and while that might have been intentional, it left me feeling a bit let down. It almost makes you wonder if Demon Slayer is capable of having a truly weak season. Overall, it just felt… underwhelming and disappointing.

While the season had strong moments – like the exciting start of the battle against Muzan and Tanjiro’s training with Obanai Iguro – much of Demon Slayer Season 4 felt familiar and lacked surprises. It largely played out as a standard training arc, with Tanjiro steadily improving his skills, and many viewers are hoping for a more dynamic storyline in the future.

Zenitsu Was Still Whining and Yelling in Season 4

Zenitsu’s Growth Still Had to Wait

I’m a huge Demon Slayer fan, but honestly, some characters really tested my patience – Zenitsu Agatsuma especially! Thankfully, he finally had a great moment in the Infinity Castle movie when he fought Kaigaku. It was awesome to see him pull himself together! Still, it took him way too long to really step up and become the hero we knew he could be alongside Tanjiro and the others.

Even by Season 4, Zenitsu hadn’t changed much – he was still the anxious and complaining character viewers first met. Throughout the Hashira training, he found something to complain about constantly, often feeling scared and overwhelmed by everyone around him. By this point, his constant worrying had become tiresome and wasn’t funny anymore.

Tanjiro Never Finished the Job When Fighting Akaza

The Chance For Bloody Revenge is Gone

Tanjiro Kamado, the main character of Demon Slayer, could let fans down if he doesn’t step up and win his biggest battles on his own. While teamwork is common in stories like this, it’s important that he finishes the job himself – leaving things incomplete wouldn’t be well-received.

Tanjiro typically wins his battles – he defeated opponents like Enmu, Kyogai, and Gyutaro. However, his fight with Akaza was different. Though Tanjiro promised to defeat Akaza, and fought alongside Giyu in the Infinity Castle, he wasn’t able to deliver the final blow. Akaza ultimately chose to end his own life, bringing the fight to an unusual close. While this added depth to Akaza’s story, it was disappointing for Tanjiro to have his enemy defeat himself.
