People love being transported to worlds brimming with magic and fantastical elements, often populated by creatures like elves and demons. Magic itself usually plays a central role, acting as a key power source or a fundamental force within the world. Whether it’s a relaxing, character-driven series like Mushishi or an action-packed adventure like Black Clover, magical fantasy offers something for everyone.
Mushi-Shi

I’ve always found Mushi-shi to be a truly unique anime. It’s incredibly popular, particularly in Japan, and follows a traveler named Ginko as he wanders through a beautifully imagined world that feels like it’s set somewhere between old and new Japan. It’s not a series packed with action, though. Instead, each episode feels like a self-contained story as Ginko encounters all sorts of strange and wonderful creatures called Mushi during his travels.
I absolutely love how the main character always lends a hand to both the strange, spiritual creatures – the Mushi – and the people he meets. That’s a big part of what makes Mushi-shi so special! It’s a truly unique fantasy anime; it feels completely different from shows like Frieren or Black Clover, which I also enjoy, but in its own way. It’s a real shame it finished airing back in 2014, and honestly, unless they announce something new, I don’t think we’ll be seeing any more of it, which is a bit heartbreaking.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Recently, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has become incredibly popular, earning a place among the highest-rated anime series ever made. The show is a fantastic fantasy adventure set in a medieval world, filled with magical creatures and mystical beings – including Frieren herself, who is an Elf.
Magic is a core part of the story and characters in Frieren, and it’s constantly developing. Because Frieren has lived for so long, she’s witnessed these changes firsthand, like humans learning magic more quickly. Ultimately, Frieren is a heartwarming story about finding joy in everyday moments and cherishing the relationships we have. The second season recently concluded, and a third season is planned for next year.

Delicious in Dungeon

Unlike typical magic systems, witches in this world don’t just wave their hands or speak spells – they must learn to skillfully draw magical runes. Becoming a witch is a difficult path, and Coco begins her training as an apprentice to Qifrey, hoping to one day find a way to restore her mother, who was accidentally turned to stone.
Fairy Tail

Compared to other action-adventure anime, Fairy Tail stands out with its incredibly imaginative and magical world. Created by Hiro Mashima, the series isn’t necessarily praised for its writing, but its captivating world and characters have kept viewers engaged for a long time. Magic is central to everything in Fairy Tail, even everyday things like transportation rely on it.
Each member of the main group in Fairy Tail has a different magical ability. Natsu can control fire like a dragon, and Lucy summons spirits using special keys. Although the original Fairy Tail manga is finished, it’s coming back for a short celebration of its 20th anniversary. Many fans are hoping this leads to a new animated series, as the recent ‘100 Year Quest’ project wasn’t very well-received.
Black Clover

Over the past ten years, Black Clover has become a leading new Shonen series. Its captivating story makes it one of the best magical fantasy series available. The world of Black Clover is built around magic, with almost everyone possessing mana. In the Kingdom of Clover, people receive their own magical grimoire at age fifteen. The series also includes other fantastical creatures like elves and demons.
Asta, the central character in Black Clover, doesn’t have magic, but possesses a rare and powerful ability called Anti-Magic. While the popular manga series is nearing its end, fans can still follow the story thanks to its ongoing anime adaptation.
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a popular anime series that stands out from other fantasy shows. Instead of taking place in a typical European-style world, it’s set in a world inspired by Arabian stories, particularly 1001 Nights. The story centers around Aladdin and Ali Baba, and the entire world is built around a concept called Rukh, which is the source of all magic. People can perform magic by controlling the Rukh.
