Summary
- Video games provide a safe space for gamers to explore dark impulses and embrace chaos.
- Titles like Tyranny and Overlord 2 offer players the opportunity to engage in evil gameplay in evil worlds.
- Embracing chaotic evil in games like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Fallout: New Vegas allows for unrestrained, destructive behavior.
It’s common knowledge that many individuals, including gamers, are generally attracted to the allure of heroism and grandeur instead of villainy or rampant destruction. Yet, it’s also true that sometimes, we all yearn for a taste of chaos, even for a brief moment. Fortunately, most of us can usually control this urge without facing any repercussions.
In a different perspective, it’s intriguing to ponder over the thrill of indulging in those hidden impulses. Video games provide an engaging platform where we can explore our inner rebel, offering a secure yet stimulating environment for our mischievous side to run wild. Whether it’s backstabbing friends, tormenting non-player characters, or simply sowing chaos, these virtual worlds let us unleash our darker instincts in a fun and satisfying way.
8. Tyranny
Forging The Future (Of Evil)
Many people believe that the notion of “good versus evil” oversimplifies a story, dividing it into simple, straightforward elements. However, Obsidian’s game Tyranny challenges this perspective by presenting a world where evil has already triumphed, heroes have fallen, and the main antagonist is now focused on mopping up remnants rather than pursuing grand ambitions.
In this game, players assume the role of one of the dark emperor’s malevolent lieutenants, known as a Fatebinder. As they wipe out the final vestiges of hope in the world, players have complete freedom to decide their own course of action, although the game strongly encourages evil deeds. Choosing chaotic evil is an option, and there are factions and allies that can be joined throughout the narrative to suit the ruthless psychopath playstyle.
7. Overlord 2
For Those Who Favor Destruction Over Domination
Title suggestion: “Overlord 2: Spreading Malice Across the Land”
In this game, you embark on a wicked journey, carrying out deeds that would make others shudder. Compared to its predecessor, the concept of morality has been refined in “Overlord 2”. Instead of focusing solely on the degree of evil (Corruption), it now assesses the nature of your malevolence through a Tyranny Rating system.
Players frequently encounter choices between ruling or causing ruin. Choosing the path of destruction tends towards chaotic evil rather than lawful evil. Opting for senseless devastation, players may acquire more potent versions of spells designed to clear obstacles instantly, instead of those that control minions or persuade foes to fight each other.
6. Grand Theft Auto 5
Chaos And Evil Ride With Trevor Behind The Wheel
Apart from the fourth one, which is more restrained, the Grand Theft Auto series has always been about promoting chaos. In particular, Grand Theft Auto 5 truly embodies this trait, particularly through its third and most unruly character, Trevor.
Michael’s calm, reactive demeanor could suggest a neutral evil character, while Franklin leans more towards lawful evil with his involvement in stock manipulation and preference for organized criminal activities. Among the Grand Theft Auto characters, Trevor stands out as particularly chaotic and unstable, appealing to players who enjoy causing chaos or those who appreciate the thrill of racking up points before facing consequences.
5. Pathfinder: Kingmaker
Reign Over A Gleefully Malevolent Barony
As a gamer, I’ve come across the notion that every king is a tyrant, but in the captivating world of Pathfinder: Kingmaker, it’s different for me. Instead of being just another ruler, I get to claim, shape, and govern my very own kingdom, or more precisely, my barony. Depending on the moral compass I choose for my character, I can either foster a thriving, content society, or, if I play a chaotic evil character, unleash a reign of chaos and carnage.
Instead of scenic landmarks and bustling trading centers, there’s an overabundance of brutal displays such as impaled or crucified bodies, with greedy guards enforcing a corrupt protection racket. The kingdom management system in Kingmaker enables players to make harsh choices, backstab friends, and sow discord throughout the realm.
4. Destroy All Humans
Does Exactly What It Says On The Tin
Historically, humans have not always demonstrated a commendable behavior when visiting new lands and cultures, often falling short in maintaining good guest conduct. If intelligent life exists beyond our planet and resembles humanity in any way, an encounter of the third kind – a peaceful, friendly interaction – might unfortunately devolve into a situation where we are subjugated or plundered by a technologically advanced alien species.
The fundamental concept of the game “Destroy All Humans” is that it places you in the role of Cryptosporidium 137, an extraterrestrial, whose objective is to eliminate all humans using explosions, disintegration beams, and lethal anal probes filled with imploding heads.
3. Baldur’s Gate 3
Embracing The Classic Murder Hobo Archetype
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve come to appreciate just how vast the playstyle possibilities are in Baldur’s Gate 3, a fact that not many gamers worldwide seem to fully grasp. For those who might be missing out, let me assure you, Larien has done an exceptional job of replicating the immersive roleplaying freedom found in a traditional Dungeons & Dragons game within this adaptation. Unlike most other games, Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t hold your hand or restrict your actions to keep the story on track. Instead, it encourages you to embrace the chaos and unpredictability that comes with acts of chaotic evil, giving you the true tabletop gaming experience.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, the narrative remains dynamic and caters to a player’s unexpected self-centeredness. For instance, one of the predefined characters and potential companions, Asterion, is inherently chaotic evil. The “Dark Urge” origin story provides an in-game justification for his constant impulse to kill any NPC he encounters.
2. Prototype
Become A Psychopathic Walking Talking Biomass
Alex Mercer, who embodies a nearly indestructible supervirus, isn’t morally upstanding. Driven by his quest for answers and vengeance, he shows no mercy in his path of destruction, whether it’s intentional or not. The gameplay encourages the player to indiscriminately absorb every individual they encounter, be they friend or foe. In essence, the design of the game promotes this destructive behavior.
In reality, avoiding being a brutal creature in the game Prototype proves challenging since Mercer unleashes an instantaneous burst of tendrils, claws, and lethal power with just one button press, making nearby pedestrians – who are quite fragile compared to him – easy targets. To Mercer, these seemingly harmless, moving, talking healthpacks could as well be soft plastic balls in a ball pit, as he ruthlessly demolishes them at an alarming pace.
1. Fallout: New Vegas
Roleplay The Reaper At The End Of The World
Fallout: New Vegas is renowned for being one of the most mature and captivating role-playing games in video game history, boasting relatable characters, profound philosophical ideas, and significant decisions that matter. Additionally, it’s celebrated for providing players with almost limitless opportunities for violence, should they choose to follow that path. However, chaos isn’t just about violence; it’s about causing violence unpredictably, which sometimes involves spreading it evenly and occasionally.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself drawn to the Lawful Evil faction, aligning with Caesar’s Legion. Yet, Chaotic Evil characters like me have endless opportunities to create chaos, from cold-blooded murder sprees to making the worst decisions possible in terms of game management and security. A courier like me who manages to mess everyone over can expect a grim (or darkly amusing) ending sequence, detailing the repercussions of my destructive incompetence and insatiable thirst for destruction.
