8 Strongest Staff Users in Shonen Anime

It’s common to see characters who wield staves in action-packed anime, or shonen. This genre provides a great setting for showcasing their fighting and magical abilities. Some characters use staves to channel magic, while others use them as weapons for hand-to-hand combat.

As a huge fan of shonen anime, I’ve seen so many characters use staves, and some are seriously powerful! But honestly, only a handful really stand out as masters of the weapon. So, I wanted to dive in and take a closer look at who I think are the absolute strongest staff users in all of shonen anime!

Son Goku

  • Anime: Dragon Ball
  • Staff: Power Pole

Son Goku, the famous hero from many action-packed anime shows, is well-known for his incredible staff, the Power Pole. This red pole is special because it can grow to be eight times the size of Earth! This makes it ideal for Goku to travel quickly between places like Korin Tower and the Lookout. He can change its length whenever he needs to, making it a really useful tool.

Goku doesn’t use his staff as much anymore, but he can still pull it out for a fight when he needs to. Interestingly, when he’s not using it, you can usually find it at Master Roshi’s house – he uses it as a clothesline!

Toji Fushiguro

  • Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Staff: Playful Cloud

Toji Fushiguro isn’t known for having a lot of cursed energy, but his incredible strength and fighting skills make him one of the most powerful characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. He’s a formidable opponent in battle, even capable of defeating the highly skilled Gojo Satoru in a direct fight.

Toji Fushiguro was incredibly physically strong, making him well-suited to use the Playful Cloud, a cursed tool that looks like a three-part staff. He was the first person to use the Playful Cloud, before others like Geto, Maki, Megumi, and Todo did.

The Playful Cloud technique seems to work better for people with incredible physical strength than those who rely on cursed energy. We see this with Toji, who was able to defeat many cursed spirits and even destroy Dagon – a powerful opponent that Maki, Naobito, Megumi, and Nanami couldn’t overcome as a team.

Nami

  • Anime: One Piece
  • Staff: Clima-Tact

Being a member of Luffy’s crew means Nami often encounters dangerous enemies – including marines, pirates, and sea creatures. Unlike Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, she doesn’t have superhuman strength, a Devil Fruit power, or natural resilience. Because of this, Nami depends on her Clima-Tact to keep herself and her crewmates safe.

Nami obtained a powerful weapon, the Clima-Tact, thanks to Usopp’s ingenuity. While her initial versions were simpler, with upgrades from Franky and the addition of Zeus, it can now produce devastating lightning attacks capable of instantly defeating even strong enemies like the giant Road.

Whis

  • Anime: Dragon Ball
  • Staff: Angel Attendant’s Staff

Leaving Whis off this list would be a huge mistake. As Beerus’s assistant and martial arts teacher, he’s become incredibly popular, especially with his Angel Attendant’s Staff. He’s one of the most powerful characters in all of Dragon Ball, so strong that even Goku in his Ultra Instinct form has trouble matching him.

Whis frequently uses his staff for things other than fighting, like bringing people back to life, teleporting, and sensing a planet’s energy. But he’s certainly capable in battle when he needs to be. Even without his staff, Whis is powerful enough that both the Z fighters and Beerus greatly respect him.

Hagoromo Otsutsuki

  • Anime: Naruto
  • Staff: Six Paths Shakujo

Hagoromo Otsutsuki was essential to the world of Naruto. He introduced ninjutsu, the Tailed Beasts, and even the concept of chakra itself. His impact was so great that it formed the basis for everything that happened afterward, and his contributions can’t be overstated.

Hagoromo Otsutsuki frequently fought with the Six Paths Shakujo, a staff also used by Madara and Obito Uchiha. This staff has the unique ability to cancel out any physical attack or ninja technique it touches. It’s crafted from special orbs that seek out truth.

Frieren

  • Anime: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
  • Staff: Red Staff

Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End joins the list, easily identified by her red staff. Because she’s an elf, Frieren has a much larger mana capacity than humans do, and her staff helps her focus that power when fighting and casting spells.

Frieren prefers using very simple attack and defense spells. It might not sound impressive, but she’s so skilled with them that they become surprisingly powerful and hard to counter.

Frieren is a powerful and experienced mage. Over the years, she’s gathered a vast amount of magical knowledge and learned numerous spells, making her a formidable fighter.

Zanka Nijiku

  • Anime: Gachiakuta
  • Staff: Lovely Assistaff

Zanka Nijiku is considered the most skilled vital instrument user among the Cleaners, making him a formidable fighter. He’s not just an expert with weapons, but also a smart and strategic combatant who can quickly figure out his opponents and respond effectively.

Despite having an unusual title, Zanka’s ‘assistaff’ is a powerful and deadly weapon. He can effortlessly slice through even the toughest Trash Beasts with it, detect enemies through its vibrations, and even make its spikes fly backward for an extra powerful strike.

Mystogan

  • Anime: Fairy Tail
  • Staff: Magic Staves

Mystogan, who is essentially Jellal Fernandes from another world, is a remarkably powerful S-class mage in Fairy Tail despite not being born with any natural magical talent. He uses multiple magic staves to cast spells and fight with the strength of a top-level mage.

Mystogan is a powerful mage with a diverse skillset, including potent sleep magic, illusions, and control over air. He can fight using multiple magic staves simultaneously, allowing him to perform attacks like Sacred Song – a focused magical beam – and Mirror Water, which can bounce spells back at his enemies.
