8 Strongest Summoners in Shonen Anime

Many action-packed anime shows, often called “shonen,” feature characters with the ability to summon creatures or objects to help them fight. This power appears in many forms – in Naruto, ninja use summoning techniques, in Black Clover, mages connect with spirits, and in Jujutsu Kaisen, sorcerers call upon shikigami. There’s a huge range of these summoners across the genre.

Many anime heroes are known for their amazing powers, and some can also summon creatures to fight alongside them. Let’s explore some of the most powerful summoners in shonen anime.

8. Recca Hanabishi

  • Anime: Flame of Recca

Flame of Recca is a classic shonen anime about a high schooler named Recca Hanabishi who discovers he can summon eight unique flame dragons. As his hidden past comes to light, Recca learns he’s connected to a world of ancient ninja clans and powerful fire-based abilities.

Recca discovers his history and the extent of his abilities, eventually earning the trust and allegiance of eight powerful flame dragons. He can call upon their unique fire powers by writing their names in the air, allowing him to overcome formidable enemies in battle.

7. Eren Yeager

  • Anime: Attack on Titan

Throughout the story of Attack on Titan, Eren Yeager’s Titan abilities become increasingly powerful, eventually surpassing those of other Titan shifters. He gradually gains the ability to control other Titans, using them as extensions of himself to fight in battle.

Eren Yeager, using the power of the Founding Titan, controlled millions of colossal Titans during an event known as the Rumbling. These Titans destroyed everything in their path, devastating entire landscapes and resulting in the deaths of approximately 1.5 billion people. Eren believed this extreme action was necessary to achieve genuine freedom and protect those he cared about.

6. Yuno Grinberryall

  • Anime: Black Clover

Most anime shows about young boys (shonen) feature characters who select their own magical companions. But in Black Clover, it’s different – the magical spirits choose their human partners for life. This is how Yuno Grinberryall ends up paired with Sylph, the spirit of the wind.

Yuno Grinberryall is well-known in Black Clover as Asta’s close friend and biggest competitor. He’s a highly skilled wizard who specializes in Wind Magic and possesses a rare four-leaf clover grimoire, empowered by the spirit of wind. Many believe he’s a top candidate to become the next Wizard King, though some fans think he’s destined for a different path.

5. Ryomen Sukuna

  • Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen

I’ve been watching Jujutsu Kaisen, and while Megumi Fushiguro is famous for his Ten Shadows Technique – being able to summon different shikigami to fight – Ryomen Sukuna really takes things to another level after he manages to control Mahoraga. It’s incredible because Sukuna is the only character in the series who’s ever been able to tame that powerful beast.

I’ve been watching Jujutsu Kaisen, and Sukuna is truly terrifying. Not only did he manage to subdue Mahoraga, but he’s easily the strongest villain we’ve seen – powerful enough to take down Gojo Satoru all on his own. Honestly, if Yuji, Yuta, and the remaining sorcerers hadn’t teamed up during the final battle, I don’t think anyone could have stopped his destruction.

4. Big Mom

  • Anime: One Piece

Charlotte Linlin, better known as Big Mom, is a formidable character from Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece. Her Devil Fruit power, the Soru Soru no Mi, allows her to create a vast army of ‘homies’ – essentially, beings she controls – to fight for her. One of her most famous homies is Zeus, a living thundercloud who later becomes friends with Nami.

Even though it’s currently unknown what Big Mom is up to in One Piece, she’s still remembered as an incredibly strong and terrifying pirate, especially because she used to be one of the Four Emperors.

3. Naruto Uzumaki

  • Anime: Naruto

Naruto Uzumaki is widely considered one of the best characters in shonen anime, and he’s a remarkably strong summoner. Using a special technique, he can call upon the toads of Mt. Myoboku for help. Gamakichi, one of these toads, is a fan favorite because he can use senjutsu, along with Water and Fire Release abilities.

Naruto has a unique ability to combine his wind-based attacks with Gamakichi’s fire attacks, creating incredibly strong teamwork ninjutsu. This powerful combination, along with Sasuke Uchiha and Aoda, and Sakura Haruno and Katsuyu, makes them known as the modern Three-Way Deadlock in Naruto Shippuden.

2. Sung Jinwoo

  • Anime: Solo Leveling

Sung Jinwoo is a hugely popular character in anime, known for his unique ability to summon shadows of the deceased to fight for him. This is just one of many incredible powers he possesses in Solo Leveling; as the Shadow Monarch, he has abilities that far surpass those of typical hunters.

Similar to Jinwoo, the creatures he summons become more powerful with each battle. They gain experience, evolve into stronger forms, and can even learn special skills. They can also become more powerful by using magical items. Importantly, these summons will always remain loyal to Sung Jin-Woo.

1. Giorno Giovanna

  • Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Giorno Giovanna is a popular character in the JoJo series, often considered the most powerful JoJo. In Golden Wind, he’s born with the ability to use a Stand, called Gold Experience, which is unique to him. Fans will remember that Gold Experience can further evolve into Gold Experience Requiem after being struck by the Stand Arrow.

Stand users, such as Giorno Giovanna, are often comparable to summoners because they bring forth and control powerful beings – like his Stand, Gold Experience – to fight for them. However, Giorno’s Stand is special; it can actually change reality to benefit him.
