9 Anime Villain Groups That Rival The Akatsuki

Anime has come a long way, and today’s series often feature complex stories and memorable characters. Both the heroes and villains are crucial, as villains frequently push the plot forward and give the heroes a reason to strive for what’s right. The Akatsuki from Naruto is widely considered one of the greatest villain groups in anime, but they aren’t the only exceptional ones. Several other villain groups have had a similar level of impact on their respective stories.

9. 12 Kizuki

  • Anime: Demon Slayer

The Twelve Kizuki are the primary antagonists in the Demon Slayer series, and they all serve Muzan, the Demon King. Each member of the Twelve Kizuki has unique and powerful demonic abilities that they use to cause widespread fear and destruction in the world of Demon Slayer.

Within the group of twelve demons known as the Kizuki, the six most powerful – the Upper Moons – are central to the story. Characters like Doma and Kokushibo, members of the Upper Moon Six, demonstrate incredible strength within the Infinity Castle. Like the Akatsuki from another series, the Kizuki are a significant and consistently important group, remaining relevant throughout the entire story, and each member has a unique and compelling backstory.

8. Shichibukai

  • Anime: One Piece

As a huge One Piece fan, I’m always fascinated by the Shichibukai! They’re basically a group of incredibly powerful pirates who made a deal with the World Government. In exchange for having their bounties frozen – meaning the Government officially ignores their crimes – they act as a kind of defense force against other pirates. It’s a really clever, if morally gray, system. And honestly, some of the coolest villains in the series have come from their ranks – characters like Crocodile, Doflamingo, Gekko Moria, and even the infamous Blackbeard! They really add so much to the story.

While the Shichibukai weren’t all villains, and didn’t operate as a team, they were recently a major world power in One Piece – one of the Three Great Powers – until they were disbanded at the Reverie.

7. Royal Guards

  • Anime: Hunter x Hunter

Beyond the famous Phantom Troupe, Hunter x Hunter also showcases the Chimera Ants as a major threat. Within the Chimera Ants, the Three Royal Guards stand out as exceptionally powerful. They were so strong that even Isaac Netero, one of the most skilled Hunters, would have a difficult fight against them.

The Royal Guards – Neferpitou, Menthuthuyoupi, and Shaiapouf – were incredibly powerful fighters with exceptional Nen abilities. They played a crucial role as key characters in the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter.

6. Homunculi

  • Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist

In the popular anime and manga Fullmetal Alchemist, the Homunculi serve as the primary villains. Each Homunculus embodies a different type of sin, and they all work under the control of a being known as Father. His goal is to become the most powerful entity and surpass humanity.

The Homunculi play a huge role in the story of Fullmetal Alchemist. Creator Hiromu Arakawa uses them to build some of the most memorable and compelling characters in the entire Shonen genre.

5. The Espada

  • Anime: Bleach

Bleach features a fantastic group of memorable villains. Creator Tite Kubo consistently delivers well-designed characters with engaging backstories. While Bleach has several interesting villain groups, like the Quincy, the Espada are arguably the most compelling.

The Espada are the ten strongest Arrancars who follow Aizen’s orders. They act as the main villains against the Gotei 13, especially during the Soul Society arc, and continue to be important antagonists throughout the series. Known for their immense power, the Espada are often compared to the Akatsuki from other popular Shonen anime like Naruto, as both series were released around the same time.

4. Otsutsuki Clan

  • Anime: One Piece

While the Akatsuki are a memorable villain group from Naruto, creator Masashi Kishimoto also developed the powerful Otsutsuki Clan. Introduced later in the series, the Otsutsuki are alien beings who travel the universe consuming planetary energy by harvesting Chakra Fruits. This clan includes formidable antagonists like Kaguya, Momoshiki, Kinshiki, and Ishiki Otsutsuki.

The Boruto series has revealed more about the Otsutsuki Clan, but they were originally created for the Naruto storyline, and many details about them are still a mystery.

3. League of Villains

  • Anime: My Hero Academia

As a huge fan of anime, I genuinely think the League of Villains from My Hero Academia is one of the most compelling villain groups out there! What really gets me is that they’re led by Shigaraki Tomura, and he’s surrounded by these incredible misfits – people society just cast aside. Each of them found a place with the League for their own reasons, and together, they’re driven to tear down the world that abandoned them. It’s a really powerful and unsettling dynamic, and honestly, it makes them such fascinating characters!

What makes the League of Villains so interesting is that each member has a unique and captivating backstory, making them a standout group of villains in recent anime.

2. Yonko

  • Anime: One Piece

Similar to the Shichibukai, the Yonko have been a powerful group of villains in One Piece for a long time. They consist of the four strongest pirates, and until recently, that meant Kaido, Big Mom, Blackbeard, and Shanks. During the Wano Country Arc, two of the Yonko were defeated, and now Luffy and Buggy have risen to take their positions. Essentially, the Yonko have largely served as major enemies for Luffy and the newer generation of pirates to overcome.

The Yonko, as demonstrated in the Wano arc, are incredibly powerful, pushing the protagonist to surpass their limits and grow stronger during fights. Their overwhelming strength and fear-inducing reputation make them a danger even to the World Government.

1. Phantom Troupe

  • Anime: Hunter x Hunter

I’m a huge fan of Hunter x Hunter, and one of the things that really sets it apart is the Phantom Troupe! They’re just an amazing villain group. Their leader, Chrollo – often called the Spider – is unbelievably powerful, and he’s surrounded by a team of incredibly skilled Hunters who aren’t afraid to do some seriously terrible things. They’re complex, dangerous, and honestly, just fascinating to watch.

Most members of the Phantom Troupe originally come from Meteor City, though they don’t all have the same history. The group includes many interesting characters, like their leader, Chrollo, as well as Hisoka, Feitan, Machi, Nobunaga, and Pakunoda. As the story heads towards the Dark Continent, the Phantom Troupe will likely play an even bigger role going forward.
