Summary
- Devil May Cry’s roots are intertwined with Resident Evil, underscoring the need to keep DMC relevant.
- Though Capcom is currently more focused on Resident Evil, it should consider giving attention to Devil May Cry, especially given DMC’s resurgence through the recent Netflix animated series.
- Following the success of the Resident Evil remakes, it may be wise for Capcom to do the same soon for Devil May Cry.
In recent times, it appears that Capcom’s various intellectual properties are garnering attention, but it seems that the spotlight is primarily on their survival horror franchise, Resident Evil. Since the 2017 reboot of Resident Evil 7, which reignited the series after a period where fans felt it was losing its essence, the quality remakes of the second and third games, and the release of RE7’s sequel, Village, have been followed by the highly successful remake of Resident Evil 4 in 2023. This renewed focus on Resident Evil has seemingly overshadowed some of Capcom’s other popular series, particularly Devil May Cry, their action-packed demon-slaying franchise.
The action-adventure game series, “Devil May Cry,” shares a rich history with “Resident Evil.” While it’s logical that Capcom is primarily focusing on “RE” at present, with the upcoming ninth main installment and projects like the speculated remakes of “Resident Evil Zero” and “Code: Veronica” in development, there’s also a revival happening for “DMC.” Given this context, it could be beneficial for Capcom to think about providing similar focus on Dante and his companions in the near future.
With Resident Evil on a Roll, Capcom Should Show Devil May Cry Some of the Same Love
Devil May Cry Owes its Existence to Resident Evil
Interested fans should know that the beginnings of Devil May Cry are deeply connected to Resident Evil. During the creation of what eventually became Resident Evil 4, several ideas were brainstormed for this influential game. At the time, producer Shinji Mikami and director/writer Hideki Kamiya were collaborating on new storylines and gameplay for the fourth installment. Some of the concepts and prototypes developed by Kamiya’s team eventually led to an abandoned version of Resident Evil 4, which served as the blueprint for the first Devil May Cry game released in 2001. Essentially, Devil May Cry wouldn’t have come into existence without Resident Evil. Given their close ties and the fact that Devil May Cry has been dormant at Capcom for a while, it might be an opportune moment to modernize Devil May Cry alongside Resident Evil.
The Time Might be Right for Capcom to Start Considering Devil May Cry Remakes
The latest major release, “Devil May Cry 5”, surpassed its fifth anniversary recently, and since then, there’s been scant information about a potential “Devil May Cry 6”. It appears, therefore, that a new game might not be coming up soon. Nevertheless, it doesn’t necessarily mean Capcom should abandon the series entirely. Instead, they may want to consider remaking “Devil May Cry” games similar to how “Resident Evil” was remade, sooner rather than later.
Earlier, numerous special editions and upgraded versions have been released, such as the popular 2018 release, the DMC HD Collection, that combined the first three games. The series is experiencing a resurgence due to the well-liked Devil May Cry Netflix animated series, which has already been approved for a second season. Given Capcom’s successful approach with the Resident Evil Remakes, it could potentially apply similar strategies to its DMC games, resulting in greater player satisfaction.
Although Resident Evil dominates and outshines almost every other project at Capcom, Devil May Cry continues to be well-received, particularly with its latest tie-in. Considering Capcom’s history of remakes and the resurgence of DMC, it might be wise for them to consider giving a full remake to DMC next. This would prevent it from becoming obsolete and demonstrate their ongoing dedication to supporting it.
