US President Biden Enacts TikTok Ban: ByteDance Given One-Year Ultimatum

The US President, Joe Biden, has passed a law requiring ByteDance, the Chinese proprietors of TikTok, to sell their stake in the social media app within a year of signing. If TikTok fails to comply with specified regulations, it may be banned in the United States. This legislation is part of a broader package that also provides aid for Ukraine and Israel. The Senate gave its approval with a vote of 79–18 after the House demonstrated strong support over the weekend.

US Bill Proposes TikTok Ban Without Sale

ByteDance has an extra provision in the law giving them 9 months to find a buyer for TikTok in the US. After the deal is closed, they have an additional 90 days. If no buyer is found within this timeframe, TikTok will be banned from Google Play and the App Store in the US. This action stems from concerns over national security and data security linked to China’s association with ByteDance.

TikTok disagrees with the “unconstitutional law” and maintains that it has invested significantly in safeguarding US data from foreign interference. The company stressed in its statement that imposing a ban would negatively affect around 170 million American users and approximately 7 million businesses, restricting their ability to freely express themselves on the platform.

TikTok CEO Fights Back Against US Ban

In response to recent news, Shou Zi Chew, TikTok’s CEO, shared his disappointment in a video and reaffirmed his company’s dedication to challenging the ban. Previously, the House attempted to prohibit or force a sale of the app within six months, but the Senate did not advance the bill further. The proposed TikTok ban was incorporated into a broader legislative package originating from the foreign aid sector, which could have influenced the Senate’s decision to prioritize that legislation this time.
