Summary
- NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, bundling base game with DLCs and movie-themed character skins.
- No more Mortal Kombat 1 DLC packs will be released as the studio shifts focus to their next project.
- Rumors suggest NetherRealm’s next project could be Injustice 3, with Mortal Kombat franchise taking a break.
In early March, NetherRealm Studios unveiled the launch of Mortal Kombat 1: The Complete Edition, a package that combines the core game with all previously issued expansion packs. This comprehensive version additionally offers a pre-purchase bonus, Shang Tsung, as well as character costumes inspired by the latest Mortal Kombat film.
If it seems like they’re wrapping up all loose ends, that’s because they indeed are, as the Definitive Edition marks the final chapter of Mortal Kombat 1’s post-release story.
Don’t Expect Any Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Packs To Be Released

The official Mortal Kombat Twitter or X account made the announcement, also verifying that NetherRealm Studios have shifted focus towards their upcoming project.
The message states that the feedback from players about continuing support for Mortal Kombat 1 has been noted. Although we’ll keep providing balance adjustments and fixes to maintain the game, no new DLC characters or story chapters will be released from now on.
In another post, they shared, “We realize this might be disheartening for our fans, yet our team at NetherRealm must redirect efforts towards a new project to ensure it turns out fantastic as intended.
Although NetherRealm Studios didn’t officially announce their upcoming project, there are whispers suggesting it could be Injustice 3.
Launched in September 2023, Mortal Kombat 1 is the newest addition to the well-established fighting game series, marking a fresh start for the franchise (as indicated by its title). Although it was initially praised upon release, it didn’t spark the same level of enthusiasm as Mortal Kombat 11.
In the game, the most recent DLC character to be added was the T-1000 from the Terminator series, introduced in March. If NetherRealm is indeed working on Injustice 3, then it seems the Mortal Kombat franchise might need a pause, as the team shifts their focus towards the new DC-based fighter, which last had a release about a decade ago.
At a minimum, if you’re curious about Mortal Kombat 1, Definitive Edition includes all content released after launch, and there are plans for further bug fixes and updates, so it won’t be left without attention completely. However, keep in mind that no new content is expected to be added.
