Robinhood Ventures Fund I said it bought about $75 million of OpenAI common stock on April 17.
Summary
- Robinhood Ventures Fund I bought $75 million in OpenAI common stock for tokenized retail exposure.
- The fund plans to use venture tokens so users track OpenAI value without owning equity.
- Robinhood’s move revives legal questions because token holders gain price exposure, not actual OpenAI shares.
On April 22nd, the company revealed a major deal, calling it one of the fund’s biggest investments to date. The Robinhood Ventures Fund I, listed on the New York Stock Exchange as RVI, first became available in March 2026.
The fund explained that buying a stake in OpenAI aligns with its goal of allowing regular investors to invest in promising private companies, which are typically reserved for large institutions and high-net-worth individuals.
Fund structure gives indirect exposure
Robinhood is using this investment as the basis for new tokens that will allow customers to benefit from OpenAI’s performance. These tokens will give customers exposure to OpenAI’s price changes through the fund, instead of actually owning shares of OpenAI.
This fund invests in well-known private companies like Stripe, Ramp, Revolut, Databricks, and OpenAI. Robinhood is making it available to all investors, even those who aren’t considered accredited or don’t meet typical investment minimums. However, it’s important to remember this fund carries risks and isn’t the same as directly owning stock.
This new investment follows a disagreement between Robinhood and OpenAI that occurred in 2025. Robinhood had begun offering tokens associated with OpenAI to its users in Europe, but OpenAI stated they hadn’t authorized any connection between the two companies regarding that offering.
OpenAI clarified that these tokens are not ownership in the company. They also stated they have no connection to Robinhood and do not support this offering.
Robinhood clarified that these products didn’t offer direct ownership in OpenAI, but instead provided exposure through a separate investment vehicle.
Market reaction and legal questions
Following the announcement, Robinhood’s stock price increased by roughly 2%, and the fund itself saw a gain of about 13% (according to Yahoo Finance). This news is highlighting the growing interest in investing in private companies, especially as demand for artificial intelligence investments stays high.
Despite this, the system prioritizes legal and product-related inquiries. Those who purchase tokens connected to venture funding or fund shares in OpenAI do not gain voting power, ownership claims on company assets, or access to confidential company details.
