Summary
- Discord is beta testing “Discord Orbs,” allowing users to earn virtual currency through Quests.
- Discord Orbs can be spent on digital goods like badges and Discord Nitro passes.
Discord is currently in the process of testing its brand-new “Discord Orbs,” a type of virtual currency that can be exchanged for digital goods. This is one of several updates Discord has implemented recently as part of its ongoing evolution. A few lucky users have already been given access to beta test this innovative feature.
Launched in 2015, Discord is a globally renowned instant messaging service. It offers users the ability to establish channels, engage in voice and video chats with friends, among other features. Speculations suggest that Discord might make its stocks available to the public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), though no official date has been set yet. Some predictions hint at this event potentially taking place before 2025 concludes.
Currently, Discord is experimenting with its new feature called “Discord Orbs.” These orbs can be acquired by successfully completing tasks within the app’s promotional Quests. Previously, these Quests only offered rewards chosen by advertisers, such as avatar customizations and in-game perks. With the introduction of Discord Orbs, users can now utilize this new virtual currency to purchase digital goods on the platform, including unique badges or even temporary 3-day passes for Discord Nitro. For now, only a select group of users can access Discord Orbs, with plans to expand availability in the near future.
Discord is Beta-Testing New ‘Discord Orbs’ Currency
2025 has seen significant transformations for Discord, one of which is the introduction of the Ignore function. This tool was advertised as a more considerate method to exclude individuals. By using this feature, users no longer view interactions or messages from the ignored person, yet the individual remains capable of sending them messages.
As a devoted Discord user, I must admit that while some recent updates have been well-received, certain alterations made to the platform, particularly the UI overhaul in March, haven’t gone down so well with many of us. The criticisms center around underwhelming visuals, noticeable performance issues, and other aspects that detract from our experience.
In the U.K. and Australia, Discord has introduced an age verification system. This system can identify users through facial recognition or by scanning an ID via a QR code. Discord assures that this data will only be used for a single verification process and won’t be retained on their servers; instead, it will be deleted after use. It remains to be seen how the public will react to this new Discord feature called Orbs.
