This article contains spoilers from the Boruto manga.
Summary
- Kawaki’s role in Boruto blurs the line between protector and destroyer.
- Kawaki is driven by a desire to protect Naruto, resorting to morally gray actions.
- Fans question whether Kawaki will ultimately become a protector or fulfill the prophecy of destruction.
In the anime titled “Boruto“, Kawaki is a character causing much debate because of his progressively complex role. Initially presented as Isshiki Otsutsuki’s vessel, he swapped places with Boruto using an all-powerful ability and soon became pivotal to the storyline. This raises concerns that the damaged and tormented boy Naruto once shielded could ultimately bring about destruction, affecting not only his family but also the entire village of Konoha as well.
In the course of the storyline of “Boruto: Two Blue Vortex“, Kawaki stands as a significant character whose function is somewhat ambiguous, straddling the boundary between guardian and demolisher. While some spectators anticipate that he might one day bring about Konoha’s destruction, others are optimistic that he will choose a less destructive path. However, at this juncture, it is uncertain: Is Kawaki more of a protector or a destroyer?
Kawaki’s Complicated Role
Where Is Kawaki Now?
As I watch the intense battle between Boruto and Jura unfold in Two Blue Vortex, it’s clear that Kawaki is preoccupied back in Konoha. He stands before Amado, urging him to go to any lengths possible, with the goal of making him stronger than anyone could ever imagine. The looming threat of the Shinju Clones still hangs over our village, and Kawaki, driven by the tireless efforts of Naruto to safeguard Konoha since his days as a ninja, is determined to protect it at all costs.
“A world without Lord Seventh has no worth to me”—Kawaki
With Amado removing Kawaki’s limiters, it seems only a question of when he will join forces with Boruto to take down the Shinju Clones in battle. As part of their temporary truce, this could be their next move. For now, Kawaki stands by the side that poses less harm, choosing not to risk anything that might endanger the village where Naruto spent his childhood. Though he has a personal vendetta against Boruto due to Momoshiki, Kawaki is prepared to put aside his objectives for the sake of protecting Konoha.
Kawaki’s Future
The Age of Shinobi Is Over?

I still remember the chilling prologue of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, where Kawaki asserted that “the era of shinobi is finished.” This strong and foreboding declaration from Kawaki makes me think he might be the villain we’ve all been dreading. Moreover, Konoha was in ruins, with the Hokage Rock, symbolizing the watchful guardian over our hidden village, lying in pieces. As a result, many fans, including myself, suspect Kawaki for the destruction of Konoha and the potential demise of crucial characters.
“The age of the shinobi is over!”—Kawaki
It appears highly improbable that Kawaki will bring harm to Konoha later on. Instead, his unwavering devotion towards protecting Naruto dictates his behavior, making such a destructive act seemingly out of character for him.
Currently, Kawaki feels it’s his mission to safeguard everything dear to Naruto, with one exception being Boruto. To eliminate all existing Otsutsuki and seal Naruto against his will, he has taken extreme measures to shield the one individual he deeply cares about. These actions already label him as an antihero because he’s prepared to overstep boundaries and make tough decisions, even if it results in others viewing him as a villain.
So, Is Kawaki More of a Protector or a Destroyer?
Kawaki Is Both

For Naruto, Kawaki might be a soul in pieces, yearning for genuine affection and nurturing from a significant figure. Being acquainted with Kawaki’s sorrow, loss, and tragic history more intimately than anyone else due to their shared past, Naruto empathizes deeply with him. As Naruto grows closer to Kawaki, the latter becomes fiercely guardian of Naruto. Now that Kawaki has discovered a parental figure, someone he doesn’t want to forfeit, someone he deeply cherishes, his protective instincts intensify, bordering on an almost obsessive concern.
“You’re going to draw out all my powers to their fullest extent!”—Kawaki to Amado
Kawaki’s determination to safeguard Naruto drove him to perform questionable or downright harmful deeds. He showed no hesitation in potentially harming Boruto for Naruto’s sake. Moreover, he was prepared to imprison Naruto in another realm to shield him from dangerous adversaries, regardless of Naruto’s approval. This protective instinct of his transcends into an obsession, making him more of a destructive force.
Ultimately, Kawaki finds himself treading a delicate balance between safeguarding and causing damage. Though his motives stem from wanting to shield Naruto and prevent him from disappearing, his tactics leave much to ponder. At this stage of the Boruto saga, it’s uncertain whether he’ll reform or follow through with destruction, but one aspect is undeniable: he possesses the power to alter his destiny.
