Beware the Digital Deceivers: A Cautionary Tale of AI and Deepfakes! 😱
In a world where reality is but a fleeting illusion, the former CEO of Binance, the illustrious Changpeng Zhao, has taken it upon himself to sound the alarm regarding the nefarious applications of artificial intelligence. It seems that our dear friend AI has taken a rather sinister turn, dabbling in the art of deepfake hacking. How quaint! 🎭
“Even a video call verification will soon be out of the window,” Zhao lamented, as if we were not already living in a dystopian novel penned by a rather bored author.
He implores his loyal followers—those brave souls who dare to tread the treacherous waters of the internet—not to install software from dubious links. A wise counsel, indeed, akin to advising one not to drink the water in a questionable tavern. 🏴☠️
Earlier today, the ever-charming Mai Fujimoto, a luminary in the cryptocurrency realm, revealed that her main X account had been hacked. A tragedy worthy of a Shakespearean drama!
Fujimoto recounted her harrowing experience, claiming that the hacking incident transpired whilst she was engaged in a Zoom call with a deepfake of her acquaintance. Ah, the irony! She was tricked into clicking an update link, all because she struggled to hear the audio. Perhaps a lesson in the importance of good sound quality? 🎧
Unbeknownst to her, the Telegram account of her acquaintance had been compromised prior to their digital tête-à-tête. “She sent me the link and instructed me to follow some steps to adjust the audio settings,” Fujimoto lamented in a social media post on X, “and I believe that’s when the attack compromised my computer.” A tragic misstep, indeed!
As a result of this digital debacle, Fujimoto’s Telegram and Metamask accounts were also laid to waste. A veritable catastrophe in the realm of cryptocurrency!
But fear not, dear reader, for this is not an isolated incident. On Thursday, it was reported that BlueNoroff, a malicious actor with ties to North Korea, targeted an unsuspecting employee at a cryptocurrency foundation using the same dastardly trick. The poor soul spent weeks on Zoom calls, gazing at deepfaked AI-generated videos of their company’s executives. After a microphone mishap, they were prompted to download a malicious extension that installed a keylogger, a screen recorder, and an information stealer focused on crypto assets. Truly, a modern-day tragedy! 🎭
Such nefarious actors seem to have a penchant for targeting crypto sector workers and other remote employees. One must wonder, is there no end to their villainy?
