Twitch Streamer Gets Electrical Shock from Lightning Storm Live on Stream

During a live stream on Twitch, the streamer got shocked, seemingly because of the nearby lightning storm. Thankfully, the streamer seems to be fine now. Yet, this alarming incident serves as a warning: when there’s lightning and thunder around, it’s crucial to exercise caution with electronic devices.

The CDC advises that it’s risky to be close to any device plugged into an outlet during a storm, as lightning can strike unpredictably. This could cause electrical surges to travel through power lines and reach the devices. Unfortunately, this has led to accidents in the past, such as gamers receiving shocks from lightning strikes. Recently, one such incident was recorded on video.

On July 19, streamer chrispymate was streaming live during a thunderstorm, and ended up getting electrified on camera. At first, everything seemed normal as he interacted with his viewers in front of his computer. However, the situation quickly changed. Around the 9th second, chrispymate abruptly jumps from his seat, coinciding with a flash seen in his room and static emitted by the microphone. The audio then cuts out for a brief moment, apart from the sound of a device disconnecting, before he resumes speaking to say that he had experienced an electric shock. A clip of this incident was later shared by chrispymate himself.

Twitch Streamer Describes Electric Shock Experience

In the video, Chrispymate recounts an unexpected incident where a sudden shock was felt through his earbuds connected to his computer. This jolt caused him to leap from his chair and rush out of the room. He elaborated later, sharing that a lightning bolt had struck outside his window, momentarily turning his vision completely white before he felt an electric current surge through his earbuds into his head. Fortunately, it appears he suffered no long-term consequences, but his audience advised him to consult a healthcare professional just to be safe.

During power outages, surge protectors can provide a layer of safety for your electronics, but during an electrical storm, the safest course of action is to avoid using any plugged-in devices. Unfortunately, this lesson was learned the hard way by other gamers, including a Twitch streamer who was playing Rocket League and suffered a shock. The surge was strong enough to damage their PlayStation controller’s USB port, and they also sustained minor burns. Since earbuds were close to chrispymate’s brain and eyes during the incident, it’s remarkable that they didn’t suffer more serious injuries.
