God of War TV Series Can’t Forget What Makes the Series Great

The eagerly anticipated television adaptation of Amazon’s God of War, a story that has been in development for quite some time, is expected to delve into the more recent Norse saga. However, many fans are hoping that the show will not overlook Kratos’ origins. Considering the deep emotional foundation of Kratos, which stems from his turbulent past, including hints of the Greek saga could be crucial in making the God of War series relatable for both veteran fans and new viewers alike.

In 2022, Amazon successfully acquired the rights for a television adaptation of the popular game “God of War,” outdoing other contenders in a fierce bidding war. Originally, Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, and Rafe Judkins (known for their work on “Children of Men” and “Iron Man,” as well as “The Wheel of Time”) were attached to the project. However, all three parted ways in 2024, leading to Ronald D. Moore (“Outlander,” “For All Mankind”) taking over as the new showrunner for the “God of War” series. The current plan is to base the series on the storyline from the 2018 version of “God of War,” which follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they traverse the Norse realms to fulfill Kratos’ late wife’s final wish.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve dived deep into the world of God of War, but let me tell you, the Norse chapter isn’t where it all began for Kratos. The original God of War trilogy and its spin-offs painted a grim picture of a Spartan warrior, consumed by rage. Deceived by Ares, he took vengeance on the Greek gods after slaughtering his wife and daughter, acts fueled by his fury. These games etched Kratos into gaming folklore, solidifying God of War as a legendary title. The 2018 Norse reboot of the series found Kratos years later, attempting to flee his past and raise Atreus in tranquility, a far cry from the bloodthirsty warrior we once knew.

Why God of War’s Greek Saga Must Be Included in the TV Series

It is essential that the God of War TV series does not overlook or trivialise the Greek saga, as it serves as a crucial backdrop to Kratos’ character development and actions in the Norse world. Including flashbacks or dedicated episodes detailing Kratos’ life in Greece would provide emotional resonance and narrative coherence to his actions in Midgard. His sorrow, self-control, and determination to shield Atreus are more impactful when viewers are aware of the full scale of the carnage and heartache that Kratos is attempting to escape from, as well as what he might be capable of if any Norse deities challenge his tranquility. Furthermore, juxtaposing the tumultuous chaos of Olympus with the frozen calm of Midgard could result in some of the most visually and thematically striking scenes within the God of War TV series.

As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly waiting for the TV series adaptation of God of War, but unfortunately, we don’t have a specific release date yet. After undergoing a significant production overhaul in October 2024, it seems that we might need to be patient for a couple more years. Recently, Moore shared some updates on the God of War TV series, revealing that they are currently crafting scripts and seeking advice from director Cory Barlog, who worked on both God of War 2 and the 2018 version. I can’t wait to see how this collaboration unfolds!
