Prior to the upcoming expansion of the mobile game “Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket”, it has been accused of plagiarism regarding the new Ho-Oh Ex card. Launched in 2024, this free-to-play digital adaptation by Creature Inc. and DeNA, under the supervision of The Pokemon Company, is a replication of the traditional tabletop game. Players can gather cards, build decks, engage in battles against other players for daily rewards, mirroring the experiences found in the physical trading card game.
The forthcoming expansion for the mobile game, titled “Wisdom of Sea and Sky,” is planned for release on either July 29 or July 30, based on each player’s time zone. Just before the expansion goes live, a sneak peek at the “Pokemon Trading Card Pocket” expansion’s card list, also titled Wisdom of Sea and Sky, was leaked online. This leak unveiled more than 220 cards that had been discovered within the game files. Among these eight newly-revealed cards are Chikorita, Cyndaquil, as well as full-art versions of Pichu and Togepi.
Artist lanjiujiu recently posted on Twitter a snapshot of the latest Ho-Oh EX card in Pokemon TCG Pocket. The legendary bird is depicted soaring with its wings forming a distinctive crescent-shaped pattern. Interestingly, the artist also shared an earlier commission piece they created with a design and pose strikingly similar to that of Ho-Oh. This is reminiscent of the controversy surrounding Marvel Snap earlier this year when it was alleged to have plagiarized fan art, which can harm a company’s standing.
Pokemon TCG Pocket’s New Ho-Oh Card Accused of Plagiarism
In Pokemon TCG Pocket, the legendary bird Pokemon Ho-Oh, initially debuted in Generation 2, is a beloved creature among fans. Notably, Ho-Oh EX is poised to disrupt a nine-month pattern within the game. A fan pointed out that the artwork for this card was created by an artist known for delivering exceptional work in the trading card game. It would be unfortunate if plagiarism were implicated. Another fan suggested that if plagiarism is indeed involved, either credit and compensate the artist or rework the artwork altogether. So far, the game’s team has remained silent on this issue.

The primary attractions of Wisdom Sky and Sea lie in the Lugia EX and Ho-Oh EX cards, which some say could potentially disrupt the game’s balance. These two avian creatures can collaborate during gameplay, with Lugia discarding energy to execute an attack and Ho-Oh restoring that very energy. This Johto duo can establish a relentless, powerful cycle that often tilts the game in favor of the player. Unfortunately, there’s been some controversy surrounding Ho-Oh in the mobile version of the game prior to the expansion’s launch, and it’s hoped that the developers will address this issue.
