Director Zach Cregger of “Weapons” fame is tirelessly working on reviving the “Resident Evil” film series. He’s shared some insights about his ideas for this horror game adaptation, but he also has a distinct project in mind โ a script based on something related to Batman that he penned. Zach Cregger Is Redefining Horror And Rebooting The Resident Evil Films
Aren’t You Hyped Up For Weapons?
Initially, Cregger made his mark in comedy through the sketch series The Whitest Kids U’Know, known for its edgy, divisive humor. Alongside fellow collaborator Trevor Moore, he co-wrote and co-directed the comedy film Miss March. However, it was in 2022 that Cregger gained significant recognition, as he wrote and directed the surprise horror sensation Barbarian. Critics lauded Barbarian for its innovative shifting perspective and distinct storyline, which led to a strong turnout of audiences, causing the relatively modest budgeted horror film to achieve remarkable success at the box office.
Zach Cregger is working on his next film titled “Weapons,” which is already generating positive buzz as an audacious horror offering. Simultaneously, he’s engaged in writing a reboot of the Resident Evil series, a task he will also oversee as director. Despite some ups and downs in the Resident Evil movie franchise, Cregger’s passion for the game and his current genre credentials make fans hopeful. Interestingly, despite his achievements, Cregger is aiming higher, with a script he wrote for a Batman universe story centered around its characters.
Cregger Is ‘Dying To Make’ A ‘Batman-Adjacent’ Script, Which A New Rumor May Have Identified
More Batman Is Generally Always A Good Thing
In an interview with Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast during the run of Barbarian, writer-director Cregger disclosed that he had penned a screenplay for a film set in the DC Universe, which he referred to as a “Batman-related project.
What excites me next is… I unexpectedly penned a film set within the DC Universe. This isn’t typically my area of interest; I’m not particularly fond of superheroes – but this one tale, with its Batman-related elements, continuously occupied my thoughts. Consequently, I wrote it down and now find myself completely captivated by it.
Cregger has expressed his enthusiasm for his script in various places, and during an interview with Discussing Film, he elaborated on his “Batman-related” concept, saying that if given the chance, he would immediately start making that movie. While he didn’t reveal much about the plot or characters, Cregger did express his feelings towards the project in comparison to his other works.
Among all the work I’ve done, this is undoubtedly my most cherished piece. It fills me with excitement just thinking about working on it again! Unfortunately, I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting James Gunn personally. I’d be thrilled to sit down and chat with him someday. Who knows what might happen?
Based on information from insider Daniel Richtman (via ComicBookMovie), it appears that Cregger has written a screenplay that focuses on the Joker and Harley Quinn, who are characters closely associated with Batman. If not done already, Richtman suggests that Cregger plans to present this script to James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios. Although no definite plans related to these characters for the DC Universe have been revealed yet, Cregger could potentially be a suitable choice for the project.
Cregger Is Perfect For A Joker And Harley Quinn Movie, And So Is The DCU
It Can’t Be Worse Than 2016’s Suicide Squad
It is indisputable that The Joker and Harley Quinn are among Batman’s most renowned characters. They have spearheaded various ventures in comic books, movies, and television series. Currently, the animated “Harley Quinn” series has completed five seasons, winning over both fans and critics alike. In addition, Harley Quinn takes center stage in Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” film, with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn. Robbie also starred in and produced a “Birds of Prey” movie that showcased the character, despite its lackluster box office performance, it received positive reviews.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by the complex relationship between Batman and his arch-nemesis, the Joker, for quite some time now. From Mark Hamill’s iconic portrayal in “Batman: The Animated Series,” to Heath Ledger’s mesmerizing performance in “The Dark Knight,” and Joaquin Phoenix’s award-winning depiction in “Joker,” each actor breathed new life into this intricate character. In fact, Ledger and Phoenix both earned Oscars for their interpretations, underscoring the Joker’s enduring complexity.
However, I must admit that “Joker: Folie ร Deux” fell short of expectations, leaving fans disappointed with one of the less successful live-action adaptations, surpassed only by Jared Leto’s controversial portrayal in some circles. Despite this setback, I believe there’s still room for these characters to find redemption, a task that Matt Reeves and the DCU could potentially undertake successfully.
Gunn has demonstrated that the DC Universe is ready to take daring risks by giving the green light to the Clayface movie. This film not only tackles a challenging villain in live-action but also explores the horror genre, providing ample room for innovative ideas. Another intriguing option to inject fresh energy into the franchise could be a Joker and Harley Quinn movie, with storylines reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde or delving into complex themes of love and toxicity. Post the release of Joker: Folie ร Deux, it’s high time these characters share the screen together, which could yield profits for the studio and excitement for fans. Although the details of Cregger’s script remain confidential, the current direction of the DC Universe and the director’s recent successes suggest another unique opportunity for the burgeoning superhero series, possibly even involving Batman.
