My Hero Academia: Pro Heroes Who Seem Weak But Are Surprisingly Strong

This list contains spoilers for the My Hero Academia anime

As an observer, I’ve come to realize that the world of My Hero Academia is full of surprises, especially when it comes to judging a book by its cover. In this universe, everyone is born with a unique ability known as a Quirk, which can be incredibly powerful. Many talented individuals have leveraged these abilities to climb the ranks of the Hero Society and achieve the lofty title of Pro Hero.

However, it’s important to note that while Pro Heroes are supposed to be the epitome of strength against villains, they don’t always appear as formidable or strong upon initial encounter.

Indeed, within the world of “My Hero Academia”, there are some pro heroes who might appear passive or detached at first glance. However, their immense power is not always immediately apparent, making them seem like secondary characters. As the narrative unfolds, viewers have come to realize how truly formidable these seemingly weak figures actually are. Beneath their reserved demeanor lies a hero of remarkable strength, thus solidifying their rightful place among the Pro Heroes.

Cementoss

The Forgettable Cement Hero Has Achieved Some Pretty Impressive

  • Quirk: Cement

It’s no wonder Cementoss isn’t particularly memorable as a Pro Hero, given that he’s overshadowed by powerhouses like Endeavor, Hawks, and many other spectacular heroes who tend to hog the limelight. Nevertheless, despite appearing rather ordinary at first glance, Cementoss has demonstrated in his limited screen appearances why he is regarded as one of UA’s most dependable heroes when it comes to safeguarding the school during times of peril.

In my recent clash with Kirishima and Sato during our exam fights, I’ve proven that my ability to generate colossal slabs of cement is no joke – it can take a tremendous beating before succumbing! My mastery over this Quirk has also reached new heights, allowing me to sculpt and manipulate the surrounding cement at will. Whether I need to imprison foes in a massive dome or fortify an unshakable barrier for my comrades and myself, the potential applications are endless. At first glance, I may appear ordinary, but beneath that surface lies a power so formidable it seldom makes an appearance throughout our tale.

Aizawa

It Turns Out The Laziest Teacher In UA Is Also One Of The Strongest

  • Quirk: Erasure

Although Aizawa serves as the teacher for Class 1A, he frequently prioritizes catching up on rest over delivering meaningful lessons on heroism. This might lead some to think that he’s a hero who climbed the ranks without genuine effort, but that notion couldn’t be more misguided. In fact, as portrayed in the Vigilantes spinoff series, Aizawa struggled greatly while trying to find ways to employ his Quirk effectively during his time at the academy. This struggle made him very self-conscious about his abilities.

In essence, Aizawa’s mastery over his unique ability makes him indispensable in disabling villains during various Pro Hero missions, even during the Final War where he was the sole one capable of temporarily neutralizing Shigaraki and his assortment of powers. His seemingly laid-back teacher demeanor, however, disguises the highly skilled and formidable hero hidden within him.

Gran Torino

This Old Geezer’s Still Got Plenty Of Fight Left In Him

  • Quirk: Jet

Initially, Deku isn’t particularly excited about Gran Torino becoming his mentor in the story. But soon, it becomes evident why this semi-retired hero is feared by villains. Despite his advanced age, his special ability enables him to move faster than the human eye can follow.

As an onlooker, I’ve noticed that Gran Torino propels himself forward with a burst of air from the soles of his feet, thanks to his Jet Quirk. This enables him to swiftly navigate his surroundings and launch surprise attacks against enemies, seizing opportunities as they present themselves during movement. Despite his seemingly laid-back demeanor, he has played crucial roles in many key Pro Hero missions throughout the main story. However, it would be a misconception to underestimate his proactivity based solely on first impressions.

Thirteen

Despite Being A Rescue Mission-Based Hero, Thirteen’s Quirk Is Still Extremely Powerful

  • Quirk: Black Hole

Thirteen, a character from the series, has been criticized due to her defeat during the USJ arc at the hands of the League of Villains. However, despite this seemingly weak performance as a Pro Hero saving the day, it’s important to note that her ability, Black Hole, demonstrates an impressive level of power in action. This quirk enables her to effortlessly absorb any incoming projectiles without exerting much effort, showcasing its remarkable capabilities.

Thirteen has an incredible power that lets her block all incoming damage with just a simple gesture, like pointing her fingers, as shown when she dodged Kurogiri’s dark void attacks; however, this ability had its drawbacks, as it eventually led to her own downfall. Given her extended absence from the storyline, it’s no surprise that people might view her as relatively weak. But make no mistake, her power is incredibly strong. Unfortunately, she was thrust into a battle against a powerful villain right away, which prevented us from fully appreciating her true capabilities throughout much of the narrative.

Ms. Joke

She May Seem Aloof, But This Pro Hero Is Secretly No Joke

  • Quirk: Outburst

In the narrative, Miss Joke stands out as an unusual character due to her early appearance during the students’ exam monitoring, followed by a significant absence for numerous chapters and episodes, limiting her chances to exhibit her peculiar Quirk power. The name “Miss Joke” hints at her ability to make anyone laugh hysterically upon telling them a joke. This laughter has unique consequences: it can momentarily paralyze the target or even coerce a villain into revealing confidential information that they’d rather keep hidden.

This was evident when she interrogated Spinner following his capture during the war, showcasing an underlying resilience. However, when Ms. Joke first appeared, this inner strength wasn’t fully conveyed as she was primarily portrayed as comic relief and a light-hearted contrast to the consistently grim Aizawa. Yet, given that anyone who has ascended to the Pro Hero ranks must possess remarkable strength, it’s no wonder that Ms. Joke exhibits such resilience, even though her fighting style differs somewhat from her fellow professionals.

Fat Gum

Fat Gum Is A Defensive Powerhouse With A Goofy Personality

  • Quirk: Fat Absorption

Fat Gum isn’t the kind of Pro Hero that instills terror just by his appearance. Instead, he appears more like an innocent youngster, making it hard for people to believe he’s one of the top heroes in the Academy. Adding to this, his playful and cheerful demeanor makes him seem like a new, enthusiastic student who joined UA to socialize and have fun rather than a seasoned professional.

In the Overhaul arc, people’s views of Fat Gum shifted dramatically. This change was due to his remarkable resilience against Overhaul’s henchmen, which could be attributed to his exceptional Quirk ability. By utilizing his body fat to counteract Rappa’s powerful assaults, Fat Gum managed to tire out his adversary before delivering a decisive, crushing blow. Although Fat Gum is generally kind and innocent, it’s always best to avoid provoking him, given the immense damage he can inflict when cornered.

Power Loader

Despite Barely Being In The Series, Power Loader Can Cause Some Serious Carnage On The Battlefield

  • Quirk: Iron Claws

Fanatics may recall Power Loader as Mei’s diligent, tech-loving sidekick who often lends a hand with her innovative projects. Given the immense popularity of Mei among fans, Power Loader frequently takes a backseat in the narrative, appearing infrequently and not given many opportunities to display his full potential. Despite being overshadowed by prominent Pro Heroes like All Might and Endeavor, Power Loader’s abilities should not be underestimated; he is no less formidable than many of his peers.

Although he can shape his environment with his Iron Claws ability, as demonstrated during his battle against Lida and Ojiro, Power Loader’s primary strength resides in his intellect, particularly his skill at designing mechs. This mechanical genius derives great pleasure from constructing a variety of lethal exoskeletons for combat, making him an effective fighter despite being older than most series characters. In fact, he often leaves a trail of destruction on the battlefield due to his innovative devices.
