Lately, a fresh trailer emerged for ARK: Aquatica, an odd and unforeseen expansion of ARK: Survival Evolved – not ARK: Survival Ascended. The intrigue surrounding its underwater adventure was swiftly diminished by the trailer itself, which was entirely produced using generative AI. Even the least educated viewer could discern that something wasn’t quite right in the one-minute video.
The controversial trailer sparked strong criticism on social media platforms, resulting in its removal from YouTube by Snail Games. During the Game Developers Conference, a key designer at Snail Games was confronted and questioned about the trailer by reporters.
‘We Did Not Know’
During a conversation at GDC with Pocket Tactics, the lead designer Matt Kohl emphasized that the development team creating Aquatica had little insight into the marketing team’s actions regarding the trailer.
In their creative process, the marketing team employed real-life images of certain resources to design an AI-generated promotional video, which had been done independently and without our prior knowledge.
It was pointed out that no AI tools were employed during the development of Aquatica, an unusual addition to a game that finds itself in an odd predicament. Approximately 1.5 years have elapsed since the launch of ARK: Survival Ascended, which is the enhanced edition of ARK: Survival Evolved.
Despite its lengthy tenure, many gamers are hesitant to upgrade and instead opt to continue playing Ark: Survival Evolved. As of now, Ark: Survival Evolved has approximately 24,236 players on Steam, while Ark: Survival Ascended counts around 18,000 active users.
