Funcom’s director of ‘Dune: Awakening’ has stated that crossplay won’t pose an issue for them. Currently, the survival MMO is only accessible via PC, but the studio has promised console users that a release will take place at some point in the future. While specific details regarding the Xbox and PlayStation versions of ‘Dune: Awakening’ remain unclear, it seems that players across different platforms may have the opportunity to join together in gameplay.
As a dedicated gamer diving into the world of Funcom’s sci-fi MMO, I’ve witnessed some intense highs and lows firsthand. The game has undeniably attracted a massive following, but it hasn’t been without its share of challenges – particularly around certain mechanics and the potential for players to create obstacles for each other.
The studio has tried to address these issues with regular updates, but some changes, like those in Dune: Awakening, have caused quite a stir among the player base. Some are thrilled, while others are less than pleased. Yet, Funcom still holds the power to unite us all, provided they manage to get some key functionalities right moving forward.
Dune: Awakening Director Says Crossplay Is in Sony and Microsoft’s Hands
During an interview with Wccftech, Game Director Joel Bylos mentioned that work is still being done for the console version release, but whether crossplay will be possible depends on approvals from both PlayStation and Xbox. Bylos stated that it essentially boils down to what the platform holders decide, as Funcom has the necessary servers in place, but they require permission from both parties to make it a reality. The recent trend of moving away from exclusivity by Sony and Microsoft, as evidenced by games like Helldivers 2 and Gears of War: Reloaded appearing on competing consoles simultaneously, may suggest a positive outlook for such approvals.

Regarding the release date of the game Dune: Awakening on various consoles, Funcom hasn’t provided exact details yet. Previously, they mentioned that the game will be released in 2026, and this timeline was confirmed in a recent interview by Bylos. He playfully hinted at a release time around the same period as Grand Theft Auto 6, but didn’t provide more specifics than a general “next year” estimate. Additionally, he suggested that when Dune: Awakening does arrive on consoles, Funcom could introduce private servers for Xbox and PlayStation users, similar to what they have on PC.

It’s quite probable that the game will undergo significant improvements prior to its console debut. As of now, Funcom’s schedule indicates that the game Dune: Awakening is expected to receive at least two expansion packs in the early part of 2026. These updates might even occur before the console launch. Keep a close eye on announcements, as the company continues to work diligently on the Xbox and PlayStation editions. Stay tuned for more updates!
