At the Gamescom 2025 event, I was fortunate enough to test out Davy X Jones, a new IP created by the Polish studio Parasight. This opportunity came via a special invitation. From the very beginning, it’s evident that the team behind this project is deeply committed to reinterpretating historical figures of legend, always with their own distinctive flair.
In a delightful twist, I can’t help but share my excitement about the captivating tales these stories weave! The intriguing narrative of “Blacktail” breathed new life into the enchanting folklore of Baba Yaga, as seen through Parasight’s unique perspective.
On the other hand, Davy X Jones delves deeper into an exhilarating adventure, placing you right in the heart of the infamous Davy Jones’ boots! This tale unfolds a thrilling quest for revenge against Blackbeard, with our protagonist meeting an extraordinary fate: posthumously separated from his body, leaving him as a headstrong hero determined to settle scores.
As a fan, I’ve got to say, this separation isn’t just for some chuckles (though the witty banter between my head and body is truly amusing). It significantly influences gameplay too! The head takes on specific tasks, such as munching health-restoring orbs, which introduces a smart twist to both combat and exploration, making the gaming experience more engaging.
Discussing the action aspect of the game, it mirrors the intense momentum typical of the DOOM series. Jones’s characters are equipped with two weapons – a hook for close combat and a pistol for ranged attacks. Although the shooting mechanics felt well-crafted, the melee system seems to require some fine-tuning. Occasionally, hits seem underpowered. Fortunately, the game has the advantage of an early access launch, providing more time to make improvements.
What took me by surprise was the challenge this game presented. You have to keep moving and swiftly avoid or deflect enemy attacks, otherwise you’ll be defeated quickly. Regrettably, the demo didn’t feature any scenes involving Abby, the ship that acts as the game’s main base for crew management.
In my perspective as a dedicated fan, the progression systems weren’t demonstrated during my gameplay experience, leaving me yearning to understand how character advancements or gear upgrades will unfold. Regardless, I was left in awe. Having delved into Parasight’s past creations, I can boldly assert that Davy X Jones appears more polished all-round, even at this pre-release stage. Without hesitation, I’m eagerly anticipating the early access launch on August 28, and I’ll be diving headfirst into it then.
