It appears that College Basketball video games will make a comeback; however, enthusiasts should not anticipate seeing them soon in the immediate foreseeable timeframe.
The comeback of the series had previously been confirmed over the summer, following initial speculation back in December that discussions were underway. Recently, EA Sports’ vice president of business development, Sean O’Brien, gave USA Today an update on the current progress and stage of its return.
According to the report, O’Brien stated that Electronic Arts (EA) is ready and eager to take on the task of reintroducing college basketball into video games, a feat not accomplished since 2009.
“[We’re] in the process of trying to figure out how that could come together,” he said.
In simpler terms, O’Brien affirmed that Electronic Arts (EA) intends to include all Division I men’s and women’s college basketball teams in their game. He described this as a challenging undertaking, yet one that EA is ready to tackle following the successful comeback of College Football last year. O’Brien expressed enthusiasm about potentially recreating the success they had with College Football in the realm of college basketball.
It’s not a new occurrence that an Electronic Arts (EA) executive has expressed thoughts about reintroducing College Basketball in public. In fact, as far back as July, the head of EA, Andrew Wilson, talked about this very topic during the company’s financial report.
In the current scenario, he mentioned that he wasn’t ready to reveal much about the game just yet. However, he emphasized EA’s intention to portray the thrilling action on the field or court, capturing the essence of energy, spectacle, traditions, and celebrating the distinctive sights, sounds, and stories of every school and rivalry.
According to Extra Points’ Matt Brown and our own sources, it seems that the release of EA Sports College Basketball won’t happen before the 2028-29 season.
It’s Not Just EA Sports After College Basketball
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say that EA Sports is currently leading the pack in the college gaming scene, particularly when it comes to football. However, 2K Sports is starting to stir some excitement among us, as they’re hinting at their own involvement in College Basketball. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds!
Following EA’s announcement, 2K hinted at their own plans with the statement, “the campus has been silent for far too long.” Subsequently, rumors emerged suggesting that initially, 2K aimed to offer college modes and teams as paid downloadable content (DLC) within the NBA 2K series. However, this was later reported by Sports Business Journal to have been changed to a proposal for a standalone game instead.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve attempted to get in touch with TopMob several times to seek clarity on their viewpoint towards college basketball and how they intend to implement it. However, on each occasion, they have chosen not to release a formal response.
